Review

"Foreign Policy Must Read 2012" by Books from Global Thinkers“Chinua Achebe’s history of Biafra is a meditation on the condition of freedom. It has the tense narrative grip of the best fiction. It is also a revelatory entry into the intimate character of the writer’s brilliant mind and bold spirit. Achebe has created here a new genre of literature in which politico-historical evidence, the power of story-telling, and revelations from the depths of the human subconscious are one. The event of a new work by Chinua Achebe is always extraordinary; this one exceeds all expectation.”—Nadine Gordimer, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature“A fascinating and gripping memoir.” —The Wall Street Journal“There Was a Country ought to be essential reading…an eclectic range of insights and fascinating anecdotes.”—Financial Times“Achebe writes in a characteristically modest fashion…Like much of Achebe’s other work, this book about the progress of war and the presence of violence has a universal quality. In a world where sectarian hatreds augmented by political mediocrity have fractured Syria and threaten to bring Israel and Iran to blows, There Was a Country is a valuable account of how the suffering caused by war is both unnecessary and formative.”—Newsweek"Memoir and history are brought together by a master storyteller."—The Guardian

A good overview of the events leading up to the Biafran War and the context in which it occurred. 'A Personal History' is a good subtitle for the book as it mainly revolves around Achebe's experiences during the war and doesn't necessarily give an overall view of how others in Biafra or Nigeria where impacted by the war, beyond more sweeping generalizations and specific stories sprinkled in. Ojukwu's (the leader of Biafra) intentions are explored to a degree and his relation to then Nigerian leader Gowon is explored to a degree. Would have liked to get a more detailed analysis of how the Biafran War affected Nigeria immediately afterwards and any consequences of the war that are still felt today (this is explored to a degree, but tends to delve into Achebe deriding Nigeria's current culture). Also, a more detailed background outlining the relationship between the Ibo, Yoruba, and Hausa people's leading up to the conflict would have been nice.

This is about the most powerful, compelling, honest, enlightening book I've ever read. I read it shortly after having read Adichie's Half of a Yellow Sun, and I've since been studying and devouring historical and sociological academic materials covering the time of the Nigerian-Biafran war. This book is as easy to read as a novel - one written by one of the greatest novelists ever. I cannot recommend this book more highly. I encourage anyone who has even the slightest interest in history, in West Africa, in understanding human relations and the human condition at all to read this book.

The author is an accomplished and world acclaimed writer. The book was very well written. It is a very interesting book that was hard to put down once I had started reading it. It enlightened me about Biafra even though I was there as a very young person. But the book was written from an Igbo man's perspective - and justifiably so. In the book, he listed the shortfalls of the Igbos but was too protective , as an Igbo person, to add most of what people know about the Igbo character. The sufferings of lesser tribes such as the Ibibios, Annangs, Ijaws, etc, were barely touched. The innumerable atrocities of some of the Biafran soldiers ( and Nigerian soldiers too) on women, that I witnessed, and the pillaging of properties did not appear in the book. However, to be objective, these behaviors can be caused by the stress of being in a war torn environment.

Anyone who knows anything about Nigeria knows it has an image problem. But those who know the country well are also aware of something deeper, more primal: Nigeria has an Igbo problem. Nigerian society has long been besmirched by a widespread animosity toward the Igbo, an unapologetically industrious people who are often perceived by fellow Nigerians as too ambitious. Indeed, in Africa's most populous country, what one might call Igbophobia is a malady more endemic than malaria. One of the outstanding contributions of Chinua Achebe's There Was A Country, A Personal History of Biafra (the last work the renowned author published before he passed away in March 2013) is his eloquent explanation of the link between these two problems. It is no surprise that Achebe confronted this issue head-on in his book: trying to write about the Nigeria-Biafra War of 1967-1970 without discussing Nigeria's Igbo problem would be like attempting to write a history of the American Civil War while glossing over the stain of slavery.Again and again since 1914, when the British cobbled together what we now know as Nigeria, the Igbo people have paid a heavy price in blood and tears for the irrational resentment their compatriots hold against them. There have been multiple anti-Igbo pogroms. Apologists for these pogroms often strain to explain them away as merely backlashes against the grasping Igbo and their desire to dominate Nigeria's economy and/or politics. In reality, though, these acts of anti-Igbo mass murder stretch back to the era of direct British rule, when the Igbo people were colonial subjects like everyone else--the first significant recorded one happened in the city of Jos in 1945, followed by another in the city of Kano in 1953 (fifteen years, and seven years, respectively, before Nigerian independence was declared in 1960).In fact, it was two particularly vicious rounds of such pogroms in 1966 that compelled the Eastern Region (which had a majority Igbo population) to strive to secede from Nigeria and establish a new country, the Republic of Biafra. [For the record, I am a survivor of the 1966 pogroms in which some 50,000 people, most of them ethnic Igbo, were massacred. I was a toddler then, and I owe my survival to the insight and quick thinking of my working-class parents.]Achebe acknowledged that when things began to fall apart in 1966, he had a hard time bringing himself to believe the awful reality. He was already a well-known writer, having made his mark with Things Fall Apart, published in 1958. The publication of another one of his books, A Man of the People, (a rather prescient depiction of a corrupt young African country brought to its knees by venal politicians) coincided with Nigeria's first military coup in January 1966. This first coup was followed six months later by a counter-coup in which hundreds of officers and men from Nigeria's Eastern Region were hunted down and killed. The mass murder quickly spread to civilians, and Achebe and his family had to go into hiding. But he soon realized that the only safe place for an ethnic Igbo in Nigeria of late 1966 was the ancestral home region, the East."I was one of the last to flee Lagos," Achebe wrote. "I simply could not bring myself to accept that I could no longer live in my nation's capital, although the facts clearly said so. My feeling toward Nigeria was one of profound disappointment. Not only because mobs were hunting down and killing innocent civilians in many parts, especially in the North, but because the federal government sat by and let it happen."What followed was a desperate attempt by the people of the Eastern Region to obtain from the Northern-controlled federal government some reassurances of security of life and property, and some form of compensation for the victims. None were offered. This was not surprising. As Achebe noted about this period just before the war:"What terrified me about the massacres in Nigeria was this: If it was only a question of rioting in the streets and so on, that would be bad enough, but it could be explained. It happens everywhere in the world. But in this particular case a detailed plan for mass killing was implemented by the government--the army, the police--the very people who were there to protect life and property. Not a single person has been punished for these crimes. It was not just human nature, a case of somebody hating his neighbor and chopping off his head. It was something far more devastating, because it was a premeditated plan that involved careful coordination, awaiting only the right spark."In spite of their wrenching losses, the people of the Eastern Region would have preferred that Nigeria be kept together if a way could be found to reassure them that, going forward, their lives and property could be safe. They had a lot to lose in a splintered Nigeria. Until the forced exodus back to their home region, easterners were far more dispersed around the country than people from any other part of the country, and they were forced to abandon a lot of immovable property (especially real estate) all over Nigeria during the crisis. They were not eager for Nigeria to break up; if they had good reasons to believe they would not lose their lives trying to do so, they would have preferred to return to places like Lagos and Ibadan and Kaduna and Kano to reclaim what they'd left behind.A peace summit in Aburi, Ghana seemed to offer some promise of reconciliation in January 1967. But the increasingly confident federal military government quickly reneged on the agreement reached at Aburi. (Yakubu Gowon, the Northern army officer who headed Nigeria's military government at this time, was a rather dapper man whose outward charm did not readily betray his attitude toward the Igbo. Of course Gowon's actions spoke louder than his looks, but he had many reasons to feel very confident--the British government loved Gowon and made no secret of its eagerness to provide him with the weapons and diplomatic support he wanted. And most world powers--including the United States--were willing to follow the lead of the erstwhile colonial master whose direct hegemony in Nigeria had ended only six years before.)After the federal government in Lagos imposed economic embargoes on the Eastern Region, the East announced that it was seceding from the Nigerian federation. Gowon's regime responded with a military invasion of Biafra in July 1967. The war lasted until January 1970 when Biafra and its bedraggled survivors were forced back into the Nigerian federation. For Achebe and millions of others inside the Biafran enclave during this period, the nearly three years of conflict were marked by unrelenting pain and suffering. But there was also a deep-seated conviction among the Biafran population that they had no choice but to fight for their lives. In other words, the Biafrans were convinced that Nigeria's behavior before and during the war essentially gave them just two options: to die on their knees in abject submission, or to die fighting. Those who still wonder why Biafran resistance lasted as long as it did, even when the military situation seemed utterly hopeless, would do well to understand and acknowledge this hard reality.Nigeria may have succeeded in forcing the Biafrans back into the troubled federation, but postwar Nigerian history joins the prewar history in indicating that Biafra held the moral high ground in that conflict. Today's Nigeria is even more plagued than ever by raffish venality and criminal misrule. Meanwhile, a vicious Islamist terrorist insurgency is wreaking havoc in the old Northern Region, causing many observers to wonder once again about Nigeria's stability, even its very future.Well, for now, at least, Nigeria limps along, hobbled by a self-imposed curse of impunity and the specter of heinous crimes committed in its war against Biafra, particularly its use of starvation as a blunt-force weapon that essentially destroyed an entire generation of young children. As deeply concerned as he was with the crass brutality with which the Nigerian government conducted the war itself, at the cost of some two million Biafran lives, this was not the only factor underpinning Achebe's apprehension about Nigeria's future."What has consistently escaped most Nigerians in this entirety travesty," he wrote, "is the fact that mediocrity destroys the very fabric of a country as surely as a war--ushering in all sorts of banality, ineptitude, corruption, and debauchery. Nations enshrine mediocrity as their modus operandi, and create the fertile ground for the rise of tyrants and other base elements of society, by silently assenting to the dismantling of systems of excellence because they do not immediately benefit one specific ethnic, racial, political, or special-interest group. That, in my humble opinion, is precisely where Nigeria finds itself today!"Chinua Achebe has done his part and, as Nigerians like to put it, "joined his ancestors." Only time will tell if the Nigerian experiment is ultimately a viable one.

Miss Georgia is an extremely talented artist and writer. The drawings are painted exquisitely in water color and every time I go back to re-read a strip, I will always find some new and tiny detail I have missed. The cats are hilarious and heart warming, and they feel so life like. My family and I have become so invested in this strip and just adore all of the characters. Cat personalities are spot on for anyone who has ever been around cats for any length of time. These strips will make you laugh, cry, giggle, tear up, and outright guffaw. You won't be disappointed in this book.Edit: You can now find these guys daily in newspapers now!I have given this book as gifts to several family members and all have loved. I love how this comic is family friendly for ALL ages. You don't see that too often anymore.I really hope the publisher makes a second (and third and fourth, etc!) book of our favorite feline reporters! My cats give it 4 paws up each!

I've loved this comic strip from the first time I read it. The idea of cats as reporters is funny, & fits them, too. I love viewing the world from their point of view. I read the strip every day & can't wait until the next book!

Georgia Dunn's comic strip about cats (both her own, and neighbor kitties) reporting the daily events that happen around them as only on the spot crackerjack reporters can is warm and sweet. Whether noting the weather changes, the existence of neighbor cats, or simple events within the house, these cats are eager to let the world know about great things happening from their points of view. Cats Elvis, Puck, and Lupin are as excited about discovering hidden passages within the house as they are scared of the vacuum cleaner. A box full of packing peanuts tantalizes them almost as much their people choosing to sleep in on a Saturday morning annoys them. Sunbeams are as worthy of a report as their battles with their people to be up on the tables and counters.I discovered the strip last year, and have been entranced by the artwork and writing as much as the characters. Simple and sweet, these cats view the world from an angle I sometimes forget exists. My own feline family members would fit into this world quite easily, and it is a common event now for me to imagine any of our cats attempting to get the story of the day now as I go about my day.Based upon her own pets responding to the world around them, Georgia Dunn has spun a magical world where not only to the cats have mysterious access to cameras and microphones that no one else can see, but they are still open and innocent to the world around them. Elvis is the stubborn field reporter quick with an editorial commentary, Puck is the sensitive field investigator eager to explore, and Lupin is the desk anchor who can charm most anyone. The artwork is vivid, and you can watch the author's style progress from the earliest stories into the more relaxed and detail oriented visuals of later event coverages. As the stories tend to reflect things that happen within her family's lives, she brings an honesty and innocence to the page that any parent of pets can recognize within their own furry children. The cats respond to seemingly mundane moments with an energy and honesty that is both refreshing and sweet. While the cats may bicker within their social group, the family is always strong and loving, and the life moments seen with the wonder of a cat.If there is a down side to the book, it is that it is rather short, and some of the larger episodes are forced to break down into three pages within the book. But if the reader can fall into the rhythm of the story, it is well worth the effort to not expect a set up to punchline story within eight panels. No political commentaries or schticks to settle the reader into a pattern, the strip is equally likely to address the joys cats feel at the arrival of a pizza as the concerns of seemingly wild cats wandering into another cat's semi-established territory. If you are a pet owner, and constantly wonder what is going on in the minds of your pets, this is for you. If you recognize the same awe at watching birds and butterflies in your household, this is for you. If you have ever had a cat try to climb your leg as you make breakfast, this is for you.

Want to know what's going on in the world according to cats? Join our intrepid reporters Elvis, Lupin, and Puck as they research and comment on major feline concerns. How to prepare against the dreaded vacuum cleaner? Who is the annoying cat who is always in the back yard? Find out these and other facts with Breaking Cat News!

There are not enough adjectives to express how spot on, timeless, and adorable this comic is. Brilliantly written, never failing to surprise story lines, and gorgeously rendered panels, Breaking Cat News is a new national treasure. Beyond the enchanting Cat News team antics, (which take place under the nose of the apparently oblivious Man and Woman) taking time to explore the details and Easter eggs she works into each episode is a joy in itself! As just about the nicest person on the planet, her sincere joy in bringing this strip to life shines through each episode. Georgia Dunn is a rocketing star in the funny pages. Buy the book now! You want to be along on this ride!

Georgia Dunn is a genius who seems intimately familiar with the inner lives of cats. I have fallen in love with Breaking Cat News and all the wonderful characters. I regularly laugh out loud while reading these comics and love revisiting old favorites on a bad day for an instant mood boost. I'm so excited for this book and hope to see many more to come!

If you love cats, or comics, or both, you need this book. Georgia Dunn has created a wonderful world, inhabited by authentic cats and, incidentally, the kind people who serve them. Not only the cats, but all the details of the news program are pitch perfect and extremely funny. I will read this over and over until it falls apart.

It's a little old, but still a great detailed guide to Black Hills area hiking. We purchased one prior to a late spring trip and then, realizing we'd left it at home, purchased an electronic version too. The Kindle version isn't nearly as easy to navigate (at least on the Kindle app of my iPad), so I'd recommend the print version. Provides good info re: difficulty, length, location/access directions, maps, and a good narrative description for a wide variety of trails,

I was told that this was the best hiking book written for the Black Hills and Badlands, so I bought several to spread them out to hiking buddies. It is well-written and more descriptive where the trails are more difficult to locate. Well done.

This book needs an update badly but nonetheless is a great resource on the area.

Great book about the Black Hills and Badlands! I particularly like that the author goes into detail about what each trail can be used for. I mountain bike, hike and snowshoe. I like that I can see what activity best fits the trail and what the level of difficulty seems to be.

Surprisingly had to order from Amazon as none of our bookstores in town have a copy. Good accurate detail and information.

We are taking this along on a trip to the Badlands and Black Hills in a couple of weeks. Planning on trying out some of these hikes. Seems that this book will be quite useful and informative

good book to locate a hike in the black hills I also bought a national geographic topo map of both areas

I bought this guide for the sole reason of a planned stay in the Badlands of SD. To my disappointment I had to discover that despite the misleading title of the book only 8 out of 206 pages concern the Badlands. The rest of the descriptions are for areas of the Black Hills and all over SD, ND, WY and MT.

LOKI'S WOLVES begins a new middle grade fantasy series by veteran authors Kelly Armstrong and Melissa Marr. This series will mine Norse mythology for its world building. This first volume was very much an introduction to the series and the characters.Matt Thorsen, a thirteen-year-old eighth grader, has always known he was a descendant of Thor. His family and his town are immersed in Norse traditions and mythology and are town leaders. His grandfather is the mayor and his father the Chief of Police. But Matt didn't know that he was to be the Champion when Ragnarok, the end of the world, came again. He certainly doesn't feel ready of qualified. He feels even less ready when he overhears his grandfather and the other elders say that they expect him to win but to die in the trying.Fen Brekke also knows that he is a descendant of Loki. He can turn into a wolf. But his home situation is bad. His parents are gone and he is passed from relative to relative for fostering. His only friend, and the only person he really cares about, is his cousin Laurie. Laurie doesn't know about being a descendant of Loki. Her mother is ordinary and her father drifts in and out of her life. Laurie is constantly trying to keep Fen out of trouble and Fen is determined to protect her from all dangers.Fen and Matt don't get along. But if Matt wants to rewrite the myths and survive Ragnarok, he and Fen will have to put aside their differences so that the descendants of Thor and of Loki can work together to save them all. This story is a journey story wherein Matt, Fen and Loki try to gather allies who will help them in their upcoming fight. With limited guidance from the Norns, they head off to gather allies while running from the wolf pack that wants Fen to join. They are also trying to avoid Matt and Laurie's parents who have put out APBs for those two. It is rather telling that no one seems to care that Fen is missing. The story is well-written but a little incomplete. Further volumes are definitely needed to answer the unanswered questions. This story could encourage readers to explore more Norse mythology to find out more about the old gods who are Matt, Fen and Laurie's ancestors.

Well, it's no secret I'm a Kelley fan. I've read just about everything she has ever published, regardless of genre. I haven't read anything by Melissa Marr but Kelley's name was enough to grab me; add in Norse mythology and I was sold. But...middle grade? I don't read it very often and much of it makes me want to gouge my eyes out. But, it's Kelley and it's mythology and it's a mythology that hasn't been done to death already. So, I ordered my copy. The authors didn't let me down. Armstrong and Marr wrote a fantastic adventure story full of heartbreak, betrayal, growing up, and learning to trust; trust yourself, trust your instincts, trust each other. The main kids, Matt, Laurie and Fen feel real but aren't obnoxious and the others they pick up along the way, Baldwin, twins Ray and Reyna, and Astrid, are also realistic. It's a struggle for everyone to learn to trust each other and to work together. Matt naturally steps into the role of leader but it's a role he struggles with as he lacks confidence in his ability to lead and to stop Ragnarok and of course he makes mistakes along the way.If you're not up on Norse mythology, or if like me it's been years since you read any, don't worry, the authors weave it naturally into the story. If you find it piques your interest, try out Kevin Hearne's adult urban fantasy series, the Iron Druid Chronicles where he mixes Norse, Celtic and other mythologies. The story is not all angst; there's lots of action as Matt, Laurie and Fen leave home to find their remaining companions, encounter adults who don't understand, trolls who want treasure, etc. They not only have to find their other companions but acquire certain objects and pass a test before they can actually stop Ragnarok. There's only two books left and still a lot of ground to cover. Will they be successful? Will Matt and the others save the world? Will they survive the process? Will I survive waiting a year for the next book? "Loki's Wolves" is a wonderful, engrossing tale smartly moves Norse mythology into the modern world. Go get a copy now!I own this book.

We studied Norse mythology this year and these books were a fabulous accompaniment! I'd highly suggest getting all 3 at once if you have an avid reader; because, my daughter read all three in just two days.

I purchased this book as a light read for a long flight. It is very reminiscent of the Percy Jackson series and is a fun read. Although it really doesn't provide readers with a complete understanding of the underlying Norse stories and myths, it did provide me with a wonderful escape from the tedium of today's air flights.

WARNING: *SPOILER ALERT!*I like this book a lot, so I have to give a quick spoiler and then point out why I rated it four stars instead of five.Matt (and mostly all other people that live in Blackwell), is a son of Thor, the Norse God of thunder. What puts him special over the rest, is that he is the champion of Thor. Matt, with two other friends, go on many adventures to save the world from Ragronok (the end). The second book continues the first and the third book continues the second. The reason I rated it 4 stars instead of five, is that you have to basically hang in there till like the tenth chapter. After that, then things get really heated up and exciting.

And three, while she's at it. My ancestry, on my father's side, is Northern. You can look at my complexion and see a Viking right there. So, of course, a story built around old Norse myths is right up my alley. But more than that, it's a darned good book! Think you've got it rough? Consider if you discover that you're the one chosen to represent Thor in the final battle for the world! Your whole family is named Thoreson, but you're the only one that has to battle a giant serpent. (And you thought your life was unfair, huh?) A great adventure set in the upper Midwest. I only hope the sequels are quickly nearing release!
