A few Orthodox friends came by last week and we feasted on some summer treats. Eating, drinking, we talked for two hours over this old book. We'd landed on Dorotheos of Gaza, Discourses and Sayings (1977 Cisterian publication; 2008, OSB) for our Orthodox Book Club reading. Great choice.I found the Discourses and Sayings similar to The Ladder of Divine Ascent, written from the desert just one generation later, St. John Climacus having died in 603. Archimandrite Dorotheos was born between 506 to 508 and evidently died between 560 and 580 amidst the rise of Islam and the Persian takeover of the holy land. His tomb and the ruins of his monastery are lost to us in the sands of the desert not far from Gaza, which is still making news to this day.As we know, when Christianity was made easy and legal in the third century, many spiritual athletes made way for the desert to make it tough again, to work on their souls: the monk Antony in 271; then Pachomius in 320; all this until the death of Arsenius in 450. We later saw the community type monastery--the cenobium--the one here was started by Seridos, Barsanufius and John. Dorotheos came from this line, lesser known however than contemporary Barsanufius. Ordinary Christian folk might find a cenobium type monk more approachable than a hermit type, yet we no doubt need both for the health of the church.Dorotheos was a people person monk. He was, for a time, in charge of the guest house. He mixed it up there with ordinary folk so much so that evidently when his feet hurt--which he speaks of in a meditation on the fruits of the fear of punishment and having to revisit your sins after death--he seems to attribute this physical pain to excessive guest house partying over shared meals. Nice.Other Dorotheos themes: friendship skills, diet and portion size and dealing with the passions, humility, learning to take advice, care of the soul, guarding your tongue while rating out your brother (for his salvation of course), dealing with your own falsehood, the bad taste of bad religion ("a bad man does evil when he mixes it with righteousness"), sobriety and vigilance, the price of living near vs. distant from God, dealing with your own bitterness and disappointments. For an old book, approachable themes!Yes, Dorotheos did some of his important spiritual training serving in that guest house. He loved his friend monks as well as his strangers who came for retreat. I found him warm and a good teacher. He admonishes, for example, that the solitude of a monk's cell should lift a man up and the company of men, brothers, friends, (spouses?) should test the man, too.I loved what he had to say about living, being close and near as opposed to far and separate; to God, self, others:"To the degree that the saints enter into the things of the spirit, they desire to come near to God; and in proportion to their progress in the things of the spirit, they do in fact come close to God and to their neighbor. The closer they are to God, the closer they become to one another; and the closer they are to one another, the closer they become to God."Yes, read this book next Lent. Or before. I've added him to my list of favorite spiritual advisers. Pray for us father Dorotheos.

Whether you a from the Eastern or Western church, within these pages you will find a treasure trove of truly life altering wisdom. I came to this book unfamiliar with Dorotheos' writings, but since beginning a serious study of early Christian writings, I had seen his name mentioned in the commentaries from other authors. That, along with the sparkling reviews of this book finally convinced me to order it. I am so glad that I did!The book is broken down in a way that allows for unhurried reading of the text. This is wonderful due to the fact that you will probably find yourself wanting to fully absorb every word. Yes, it's THAT good!!!

Book arrived swiftly and in excellent condition. I was thoroughly impressed by this book and very moved by it. The things written by St. Dorotheos, though written to his fellow monks 1500 years ago, could easily have been written for a sermon preached in any Christian church this Sunday. I would highly recommend this book, and its suppliers, to anyone.

Dorotheos understood things about the human condition in the 5th century that psychiatric medicine is just now rediscovering in the past 100 or so years

Simply put, this work is a life altering, thought-provoking series of essays suitable for anyone of any religion seeking a discussion of topics such as humility, the need for a spiritual mentor, treating your neighbors, etc. Written in a very accessible and almost conversational style, despite the work having been done in the mid 6th century, the piece is a must for any thinking person.

Amazingly contemporary for a monastic who lived in the 6th Century!This is one of the few books chosen by my Spiritual Father for our one-on-one studies along my path of asceticism.I will have more to say after it has been properly "read, marked, learned and inwardly digested."

I've read very little so far, and it's fantastic!

This book provides a great framework for avoiding "garbage-in, garbage-out" when approaching the valuation of a business. Professor Damodaran hits on the key points, but does leave the reader with some work to do in terms of implementation. The included examples are indeed helpful, but referring to his website helps to fill in the gaps between idea and practice.I think this book will be particularly helpful for one 'dark side' of the valuation game - trying to close in on the possible value for a startup or early-stage business tackling a potentially new market. The iterative process of revisiting key inputs (the fewer the better) is also emphasized, something which is a helpful thought exercise to evaluate a change in a company's story/narrative and what that means to the value of the business.

A very good book indeed. Perhaps there is no better book for anyone wanting to learn or perfect their skills as a financial analyst. Damodaran is an apostle of the DCF method for valuing companies and stocks, and shuns P/Es and other relative valuations. The book is excellent at describing the process from A to Z of understanding a company and framing a numerical analysis within a comprehensive story of what the company is and where it is headed. The author provides many and very good examples of how to approach this, and offers a very good framework for understanding most types of company: start-ups, mature companies, cos. in the commodity industry. The only ones he does not include are banks, which he covers in other books. He explains how to create a narrative around a company, and also provides detailed examples of how to go about the numerical analysis of cash-flows correctly and avoid unrealistic or implausible scenarios.

The procedure of valuing a stock through is rather simple once it has been learnt. And when looking in retrospect on why old valuations turn out to be incorrect it is rarely due to getting the mechanics of the valuation tool wrong. Instead it is almost always because the sales or profits turned out very differently from what was forecasted since the company, its strategy or business environment developed in an unanticipated way – the narrative was wrong. This is a book on how to combine the numbers of the valuation tools with a narrative that brings life, understanding and, by this, increased precision into the valuation made. The author is a well-known finance professor at NYU who has written a large number of finance books.As I understand it the book started with the author posting and updating the narratives and subsequent valuations for a number of stocks like Uber, Amazon, Apple, Alibaba etc. online. They now feature as case studies throughout the book. Taking a step back, Narrative and Numbers is also a personal journey for Damodaran as he over time has developed from a pure number cruncher to taking a more holistic approach. I find that when a reader is invited to share an author’s personal development the result is often very likable. This book is no exception and it is evident that the author has enjoyed writing it.The structure of the text is very, well… structured. Damodaran tells you that he will combine narratives and numbers, he describes the basics of one of those, then he describes the basics of the other one, he merges them and finally discusses the consequences. The author who describes himself as a “teacher first” gives us short but thorough accounts of the two components before merging them into a greater whole. And to clarify, the narrative referred to in this book is the fundamental story of long-term value creation drivers for the company, not the flimsy, often biased and constantly shifting stories that always surround listed companies on the stock exchange. All the way through the book we get to follow the described process through the case studies and there are further several illuminating pictures giving good oversights of the reasoning.The advocated valuation process is to:1. develop a narrative for the business,2. test the narrative to see if it is possible, plausible and probable,3. convert the narrative into drivers of value,4. connect the drivers of value to a valuation and5. keep the feedback loop open.Interestingly the author calculates one value of the company as a going concern and one liquidation value and then estimates the probabilities of each life-or-death scenario. I very much appreciate the 3P test in stage 2 and the openness for change in stage 5 importantly tries to ensure that the narratives are reasonable and don’t becomes stale and outdated in the light of changes. Damodaran’s arguing for the importance of having enough humility to alter ones opinion brings to mind similar arguments from George Soros.My main caveat is that the process doesn’t explicitly enough ensure a combination of an inside view and an outside view when developing the story. When forming a narrative it is very easy to focus on the uniqueness and thrill of the situation at hand and extrapolate from the recent history. Often this leads to too high expectations and bottom-up sell side analyst estimates are partly due to this almost always too optimistic. The outside view treats the situation statistically and takes into account the outcome of many similar historical situations. In business where success is governed by both skill and luck both viewpoints have merit.To make good forecasts narratives must meet numbers. Without the verbal structuring of the fundamental business story of a company it isn’t even possible to understand the numbers to start with. Damodaran shows that good decisions benefit from several points of view such as the numerical and the verbal and I fully agree.This is a review by investingbythebooks.com

Prior to 'Narrative and Numbers', I had the pleasure of being able to read 'Investment Valuation', 'The Little Book of Valuation', and 'The Dark Side of Valuation'.This book will not teach you how to be a better storyteller or a mathematician, but it will point you in the right direction. 'Narrative and Numbers' will help everyone to balance their brain hemispheres, and in my view, this is Prof. Damodaran's magnum opus.

Very good marriage between Stories and Numbers. Elaborates why Valuation craft has to do as much with storytelling as with models and numbers.

There's nothing absolutely revolutionary in this book. But this an accessible book which reiterates fundamental principles of valuation and investing.

Fun, snarky humor in a stress relieving coloring book. Perfect for anyone who works in an office... or with people in general. One thing that I noticed while flipping through the pages was a glaring error. The use of "your" instead of "you're". Come on... there isn't all that much to proof read. No one caught this before printing?

I enjoy this series of books. They're not true mandalas. Each one is a little phrase surrounded by a design. Some of the designs are quite intricate. Others more simple. The black paper is of good weight. I do use a blotter page behind the one I'm coloring because some pens and markers will seep through a little. I have bought others in this series and will by more. I prefer these to the more profane adult coloring books.I hope that in future issues there will be more that are true mandalas. Also, some of the drawing components are overused. Please change them up a bit more.

This is a great coloring book for adults! I love the sarcastic remarks that hit it exactly on the head. Please,keep more of these coming, I've bought all of the mandalas series that I have seen,as well as severalothers,but these are absolutely my favorite, because it's not just cuss words,those get boring you can only color the same thing, drawn differently so many times before your sick of coloring them. That'swhat makes these so much better,there's actually things to say in them,and they're hilarious to boot! Do yourself a favor and buy yourself one, I bet you'll end up just like me with all of them in your collection.

I loved the quotes. I actually laugh-cried when I read them to my husband. These have a black background so the colors will really pop when they're colored. I bought this as a gift for a friend for while she's recovering from a surgery -- super funny!

I bought this because I saw another that I loved and went searching for something similar. I liked this bc of the back background but i would have liked it better if the pictures weren't all alike.

The pages are fantastic. Quotes are awesome. Can't wait to start coloring!

I bought this for my 91-year-old mom who lives in an assisted living facility. Every day the residents get together to paint and color. My mom shared the pictures with others. All of them enjoyed this book. The pictures are simple and not overly detailed. They were able to complete their picture within a short period of time. This book brought a lot of joy to all of the seniors.

This was a gift to my 9 yr. old niece. She is too big for the easy coloring books but did not want one as detailed as the adult ones.
