Delicious and healthy. Good food is expensive and she uses plenty of it. Not for low budgets, but many good comforting meals. i make one of her dishes at least once a day. Great book for people with food allergies.

Ella Woodward is a whiz at marketing. Her cookbooks look amazing and she writes in a super enthusiastic way that makes every recipe sound both easy and delicious. For that reason, it's a very inspirational recipe book but I have to say that there weren't a huge number of recipes that appealed to me in it. She does tend to use the same ingredients again and again: cashews, miso, maple syrup...they all feel a little repetitive.I think her books are good if you are a single person or maybe a couple. They don't really deliver on the family recipe front. There are very few recipes here that my 12 and 15 year old sons would eat and the ones that they would eat tend to be variations on things we already make eg spaghetti carbonara, tomato pasta, veggie paella. But if you're looking for ideas for healthy breakfasts and lunches on the go, this is a terrific source. Her salads in particular have some terrific flavours.Specifically, I have a couple of complaints. Firstly, she tends to under-explain recipes which as a less than confident cook I find annoying. For example, her Pasta Arrabbiata recipe says "put the dried oregano, thyme, chilli and garlic into a frying pan with the olive oil. Let these cook while you cut the cherry tomatoes into quarters". Call me old fashioned, but I prefer recipes that use words like "low heat" or "keep moving in the pan" or "soften slightly". I don't like cookbooks that assume that I know what I'm doing, because I often don't!Secondly, her ingredients are not infrequently either hard to locate (vanilla powder? baobab powder?) or FREAKING EXPENSIVE when you do. For example, her recipe for Chocolate Caramel Slices looks pretty yummy but I will not be making it because to produce 16 pieces I need to use a whopping 950g (2 lb) of medjool dates! That's more than the cost of the recipe book and it's only for ONE of the ingredients!

I have to agree with Julia - Ella is great at marketing herself and her cookbooks, but the actual recipes are a little disappointing.So far, I've made her carrot cake muffins, wilted spinach and black bean salad, spiced lentil soup, spiced sweet potato stew, best baked sweet potato, and gooey black bean brownies. The wilted spinach and black bean salad as well as the baked sweet potato were simple, easy to prepare, and tasty. The others were kind of a disaster. The carrot cake muffins did not turn out at all like her photograph, which may be because whatever buckwheat flour she's using is much lighter in color than mine (Bob's Red Mill). Nowhere in this cookbook (or the previous, as far as I can see) is a brand or specific type of buckwheat flour listed, but there is clearly a difference. The muffins were also underbaked, quite dense, and barely okay tasting (the parts that were cooked through). I threw them out, and I hate to throw away food. The lentil soup proportions were off, so I wound up with a very thick soup that needed double the spices to have any flavor. The spiced sweet potato stew was similarly bland. This lack of spice was true for her recipes in her first cookbook as well, and a lot of people have mentioned it, so at least it's something easy to watch out/adjust for as you cook from her recipes. The gooey black bean brownies were not amazing - I made them for a group of friends and co-workers, everyone tried them, and decided one small bite was enough and they didn't want any more. The taste reminds me of something that I can't quite place, it's not bad, but the memory is definitely not of a delicious brownie. They aren't awful, but for me (as well as my friends and co-workers), they aren't something I'd want to eat again.Since I frequently cook meals for myself, I was happy to see Ella offering some single or two-person serving recipes as well as some "fit for a crowd" recipes. One thing that I wish she would have pointed out in the instructions for the lentil soup is you need to use a small saucepan for cooking the lentils, because the amount is so small, it's impossible to cook them before the water evaporates - I needed to watch my lentils carefully and add water as necessary to prevent them from burning because I don't own a small enough pan to cook 25g of lentils. In the end, I regretted not simply making a normal sized batch - it probably would have been less work - or something else for dinner. I found the mushrooms+beans on top to be a bit odd, I didn't love the combination. Still, it is great that these single-serve recipes are here, and I like that she offers suggestions for what to do with the other half of whatever vegetable one recipe is calling for.If you're looking for a cookbook with healthy recipes, that are simple/quick to prepare, you like the flavors Ella focuses on, and you're willing to adjust seasoning to taste as you cook, then this isn't a bad cookbook. It's not exceptional or mind-blowing, some of the instructions could be written more clearly, and I wish there were more intriguing recipes rather than photos of the author, but the cookbook is not a total loss either. There's nothing complicated about cooking any of the recipes although you might have to muddle your way through the instructions. The recipes are generally healthy and mostly low-cost, plus they can be thrown together with very little in the way of kitchen equipment. For ideas of what to throw together when I'm tired during the week and have a smattering of vegetables around my fridge to get used up, this cookbook is a good way to jump-start my brain into a dinner plan.

I like this book better than her first one because she seems to have ironed out some of the issues I noticed in its predecessor. For one thing, the book is much better organized into sections like Breakfast, Eating on the go, or cooking for crowds. When I cook, I usually go by meals not ingredients because unless I buy specific ingredients for a dish, I just grab whatever is in the fridge or pantry. Much like her first book, the recipes are pretty simple like pasta arrabbiata (takes no time to make and is always a quick lunch/dinner favorite) or cashew pesto (very good on roasted chicken with pasta). She tends to use the same ingredients: tanhni, chili flakes, maple syrup, or quinoa. It's not exactly creative, but these are pretty easy to find in most stores. The measures vastly improved for this book. It uses grams and not "mug" measurements like the 1st book. I own a kitchen scale because I prefer baking/cooking like this but it's definitely helpful when the measurements are correct. While the book isn't the most creative, I think it's a great base for introducing your own flare like roasted meats or different cheeses or whatever. The desserts do need some rising agents like eggs or baking powder, which I know she doesn't use, but they are essential to a successful bake. The book isn't groundbreaking or my favorite in my cookbook collection but I appreciate its simplicity.

There are recipes in here that I will be making forever. A good undaunting (mostly) primer for vegan gluten-free cooking for one.

This review was written at the desk of a salaried office job, where I am paid $65,000/yr to do virtually nothing important, so I mostly sit in my chair and listen to podcasts and audiobooks all day. I do this until enough executives and managers above me are gone that I can feel comfortable sneaking out. With my income from this sit, I then outsource all my chores to a slew of below living wage 21st Century gig economy employees--Uber drivers, food delivery, meal kits, laundry.Having been one of these low paid wage laborers several years ago, it seems like a cruel joke. The higher paying job I find, the less I actually have to work. The higher ranking the position, the less the job is about doing things and contributing to society.Is this a blessing or immoral sin? Yes. But it turns out, I'm not alone.This is an entertaining book of anecdotes and statistics on what turns out to be a common phenomena. It is one of the most refreshing reads that a college-educated conscious working professional can have in their library. Put down every other garbage business book that supposedly empowers you. You don't need to practice mindfulness, or rules for life, or launch a lean startup. Breathe in and breathe out, your job is unnecessary and so are most of the other jobs!Admitting this is the first step of us all solving the collective problem.

John Maynard Keynes had great confidence that capitalism will improve not only the wealth but also the well-being of all in society. One of the specific predictions he made that, sadly, did not come true, was that by the end of the twentieth century, the major Western societies would have achieved the fifteen-hour work week because technology would have alleviated hitherto long menial hours. Why has that not happened and instead employees are working longer and longer hours? Graeber blames the creation of what he calls ‘BS jobs’ (I had to shortened the word to pass Amazon censorship rules) and the ‘BSization’ of proper jobs. Graeber’s defines a BS job as ‘a form of paid employment that is so completely pointless, unnecessary, or pernicious that even the employee cannot justify its existence even though, as part of the conditions of employment, the employee feels obliged to pretend that this is not the case’. He also says that ‘Hell is a collection of individuals who are spending the bulk of their time working on a task they don’t like and are not particularly good at’. He provides plenty of examples, cabinetmakers compelled to fry fish is one of them. There is the story of a corporate lawyer who went on to become a happy singer in an indie rock band when he became disillusioned with his job as a corporate lawyer. He had taken ‘the default choice of many directionless folk: law school’ but has found his job as a lawyer to be ‘utterly meaningless, contributed nothing to the world, and, in his own estimation, should not really exist’. Some such BS jobs are so pointless that no one notices even if the employee vanishes. One case involved a Spanish civil servant who skipped work for six years to study philosophy and became an expert in Spinoza before he was found out. In another case, an employee had been sitting at his desk, dead for four days before his colleagues realised that he had died. BS jobs can also be defined by the scope of work. People who are employed in jobs that exist primarily to make someone else look or feel important are known as ‘flunkies’. Doormen are examples in this category. There are also ‘goons’ who exist only because people employ them – soldiers, for example; and ‘duct-tapers’ who are employed to help one part of an organisation communicate with another in the same organisation. In addition to financial consultancy, middle management is where one might find BS jobs aplenty. A sign that you have a job like this is when you are designated to provide ‘strategic leadership’. This is what Graeber has to say in middle management in academia:‘Now, those of us toiling in the academic mills who still like to think of ourselves as teachers and scholars before all else have come to fear the word “strategic”. “Strategic statement” (or even worse, “strategic vision documents”) instil a particular terror, since these are the primary means by which corporate management techniques – setting up quantifiable methods for assessing performance, forcing teachers and scholars to spend more and more of their time assessing and justifying what they do and less and less time actually doing it – are insinuated into academic life’. Graeber interviewed employees from various sectors. From one he quoted, ‘in banking, obviously the entire sector adds no value and is therefore BS’. Then there is the Human Resources Department that sets up intranet and instruct employees to make it ‘into a kind of internal “community”, like Facebook. They set it up; nobody uses it. So they then started to try and bully everyone into using it…Then they tried to entice people in by having HR post a load of touchy-feely crap or people writing “internal blogs” that nobody cared about.’ Graeber argues that the rise of such jobs was not due to economic factors but political and moral ones. He discusses how jobs can truly have value, and how exactly can value be measured. What is clear that we must resist ‘The pressure to value ourselves and others on the basis of how hard we work at something we’d rather not be doing…if you’re not destroying your mind and body via paid work you’re not living right’. The last part of the book is devoted to answering the question, ‘How have so many humans reached the point where they accept that even miserable, unnecessary work is actually superior to no work at all?’ From there Graeber discusses the modern culture of managerial feudalism and the resentment it generates, yet is itself oblivious to it. If Graeber is right that this is not an economic problem but a political and moral one, then the solution cannot be economic either. Unfortunately, Graeber is loath to make policy recommendations. That keeps us then, in utter suspense – unless workers revolt.

I love how an obscure magazine asked an internationally recognized scholar to submit what he believed no one else would publish -- and how that essay went instantly viral and eventually became what may be the author's top bestseller.I work in real estate. I'm of the opinion that realtors serve a useful purpose in our society, but only because of how the property laws are written. This book, along with Debt: The First 5000 Years, convinces me that within the constraints of US property law, which are outdated and unnatural, all real estate professionals exist as "duct tapers" (BS job #3) -- performing a job that only needs to get done because the system is set up in a flawed way that requires it. My proof: what other societies need realtors? The ones where American property laws are forced on people. (I recognize that American property law stems from English common law which depended on Roman legal systems.)This book is brilliant. It may literally save hundreds if not thousands of lives from suicide and other forms of self-destruction, especially if employers take much of its message to heart, implementing remedies along the way. I know I will keep several copies on the shelf at work, sharing them with anyone who expresses interest. I can only hope this book fuels a revolution against all kinds of wage labor, and that the dignity of work can be taken back from the people who use work just as a means to further their own exploitative, unexamined, or sadistic ends.

The original essay upon which this is based really said it all, and the book seems like an unnecessary and somewhat forced elaboration. I don't recommend it.

This seems to be a book by a man who had one original opinion five years ago and felt it worthwhile to spend 300 pages describing the opinion itself, as opposed to conducting or presenting research to support it.This book could have been 50 pages and contained the same amount of signal. The author states his opinions and then quotes comments from people on the Internet as "proof" that a majority of work is unnecessary, that capitalism has failed, that it is all part of a grand conspiracy etc etc.Save yourself some time and just read the original opinion article this guy wrote in 2013. This book adds no new information to that.

This is one of those books that will change your outlook on life for the rest of your days and you'll be happy you did it. Let the revolution begin!
