While Gethard is known for The Chris Gethard Show and the Beautiful Stories from Anonymous People podcast, I’m only familiar with him as musical-guest-Jeff-Rosenstock-host and author of the consistently funny A Bad Thing I’m About To Do.My stomach dipped a little upon quick realization that Lose Well would not be following the humorous essay format, but was a “self-help narrative.” I had just read Failing Up, which shared the same crux and I found a little lackluster – in short, I was burnt out on the theme of learning from your failures.At times more self-help than narrative, and other times vice versa, overall Gethard maintains a palatable mix of the two (especially to a reader who was only interested the narrative). Gethard knows his audience well (at one point suggesting the reader might be thinking, “I’m going to skip to the funny parts”). The encouragement is a bit on the . . . not jaded side, but tempered? Gethard is no Pollyanna, but recognizes the extent that attitude and motivation (and learning from failure) play in moving ahead. This is no “Keep trying and you’ll eventually get there!” This is “It’s statistically unlikely that you’ll, but even if you don’t, wouldn’t you rather faceplant in a blaze of glory?”For those who feel out of place in their small town / backwards community / dead end job, Gethard intersperses plenty of inspiring non-Gethard example figures into the text. From the Shaggs to street artists to friends who launched their dream careers late in life, Gethard gives plenty of counterexamples to the self-limiting ideas that you’re too old / too weird / too x to make a creative change in your life.While the book is as funny as A Bad Idea…, the stories are (unsurprisingly) spread out a bit and used to support the self-help advice. Gethard’s anecdotes are great – which can make it a little maddening when you have to read an extra two or three pages to get to them (…again, coming from someone not really receptive or interested in advice at the moment). Gethard’s fluid writing style makes it easy to find oneself immersed in the tales, whether it’s a long, winding journey to a great twist, or just a few simple paragraphs. (High points include Gethard’s early foray into theatre via Bye, Bye, Birdie; his investigations while employed by Weird New Jersey; and a family road trip interrupted by a nose-diving falcon.)Even though you already know that Gethard has found himself a degree of success, you still find yourself rooting for his character. He underscores the importance of hard work (as told through one of the funniest turns in the book, his pre-Y2k line job amid factory workers cum survivalists).TLDR: Gethard’s humorous stories give an enjoyable arc to a self-help book that speaks to reluctant creatives and the atypical.

Chris' first book was fantastic, so I felt comfortable pre-ordering this one. It delivered big time! I even went and bought a copy for a friend. Speaking of which, there's probably someone in your life who would also really enjoy this book...you should buy two copies. Or, hey, what about several?! You can read it with your book club! Don't have a book club? Now is the perfect time to create one! People will feel obligated to join since you bought them this wonderful book, and they'll give you a heartfelt thank you after reading it! You've really done a lot for yourself and those around you. Great job! Buy several copies!

I've been on a self-help kick lately and was pleased to hear that Chris Gethard was putting out such a book.I enjoyed him on The Chris Gethard Show and Beautiful Anonymous and figured this would be a great read.It was! It's very inspiring in a "why not, what do you have to lose?" sort of way and gave me a bit of the kick I needed to get back on track with my art and some of my more goal oriented hobbies.I own both the hard cover book which is great, I brought it along to get signed by Geth at a reading. But, the audio book is also wonderful! Chris does a great job at narrating and you can really hear the passion in his voice (pssssst, the audiobook has some bonus interviews at the end that aren't in the printed version. So if you want some secret exclusive interviews be sure to check out the audiobook as well)

This is a fantastic book for anyone who works in a creative field or aspires too. I’m a professional creative, and I’ve read a lot of books about creativity. This is one of my favorites, because it isn’t a “how to manual”. It’s a very funny, very useful philosophy for people who want to make things. If you want to laugh while you learn a useful way to stay sane while doing great work, definitely pick this up.It’s also the only book in creativity I’ve read where the author is nearly murdered by a giant in the backwoods of New Jersey.

He is very genuine. We are all a little bit weird. This book is excellent for anyone who is hustling and is looking to work their way to success. There are no shortcuts, and Chris does a great job at storytelling. Success is obtainable to anyone who has thick skin and is looking to get there by sheer perspiration and determination.

This book was amazing. I could really identify with Chris's mesaage, but I still laughed the entire time. I've always felt that the times in my life where I screwed up was when I learned the most. This really enforced that idea with me and gives the permission to fail. I highly suggest the audio version of the book - it's read by Chris and also contains interviews with some of the individuals he speaks about in the book. Really good stuff.

Gethard finds a great balance between motivating and entertaining his audience. While this book is probably most useful for people wanting to become an artist it provides stories and tools that help the reader understand the meaning of success. The book is like reading one of Chris’s notorious beautiful anonymous motivational rants - something we all need at some point in our life.

If I was a creative person, this book would have probably motivated me into making great works. I'm not, but I can see how it would be totally helpful. This book has been applicable to my life by changing the way I look at bouncing back from the four (4!) layoffs I've experienced since graduating college into the great recession. I don't know Chris, but he seems like someone that would have been in my circle of friends at basement and garage punk shows, so it felt like an old pal was talking me through it all. A+, 10/10.

I appreciate the style layout of the book. This is not my first Ayurvedic book. The layout, organization and illustrations contribute to the easy of what can be a deep and complex subject matter. I recently used many of the recipes to cater a weekend yoga retreat that asked for an Ayurvedic menu. The only fuss I had was some recipes called for Agave as a sweetener. In my opinion, agave is a highly processed food and not aligned with whole foods. I subsituted maple syrup or honey. Otherwise it is a well rounded beautiful resource. I would recommend it also as a nice gift.

This book is a heavily illustrated introduction to the traditional Hindu system of medicine for the Western student. This book discusses, among other things, how a balance of the doshas (energies: Vata, Pitta and Kapha) results in health. But it also considers Dhatus (the seven types of tissues), Agni (fire: digestion) and Malas (waste). In short, Ayurveda is a mind-body health system.This book covers an intro to Ayurveda including determining your constitution and how the body builds immunity. It covers the Ayurvedic lifestyle with information on a daily routine, taking care of your body and working toward a healthier lifestyle. It talks about maintaining good health and how to pacify the Vata, Pitta and Kapha plus strengthen the Agni.A good portion of the book is dedicated to food, diet and recipes (including what foods to eat for each dosha). It then goes into details about Yoga, followed by positive thinking and meditation.The book wraps up with details on seeing an Ayurvedia practitioner and some home remedies for common ailments.There is a lot to take in here for the Western mind and it would take further study before using this book to simply dive in to a new way of thinking about the body, health and disease functions.Overall - the illustrations make this book approachable and easily digestible. It could be a go-to guide for someone interested in learning the next step about Ayurvedic living.

Shannon Sauer-Zavala, PhD, is a Research Assistant Professor in Boston University's Department of Psychology, as well as the Director of the Unified Protocol Training Institute. Well written narrative and helpful exercises. Using as part of a counseling protocol. Not sure I'd want to do it on my own, but is a great part of therapy.

There was nothing new offered in this book that I had not already learned. Many examples given, but I could not releate to the situations
