Review

"This book has what every girl wants in a summer." -- Sarah Dessen, author of Just Listen and Lock and Key"The Summer I Turned Pretty offers a hard-to-resist combination -- a beach house, summer love, enduring friendship. A deliciously sweet read." -- Deb Caletti, author of Honey, Baby, Sweetheart and Wild Roses"If I could live inside this amazing book, I would. I would inhale the ocean air and soak up the sun, and I would hang out all day with kind-wonderful-funny-awkward Belly and her two known-'em-forever buds, Jeremiah and Conrad. I'd watch the three of them stop being kids and start being more...and I'd hope hope hope that when Belly falls in love -- 'cause you know she will -- she'd give her heart to the exact right boy." -- Lauren Myracle, author of the ttyl series and Bliss"This well-written coming-of-age story introduces 15-year-old Isabel, aka Belly, for whom summer has always been the most important time of year. Han (Shug) realistically balances Belly's naïveté with her awareness of the changes the years have brought. Han's novel offers plenty of summertime drama." -- Starred review from Publishers Weekly"Belly's dawning awareness of her sexuality and that of the boys is a strong theme, as is the sense of summer as a separate and reflective time and place. Readers get glimpses of kisses on the beach, her best friend's flirtations during one summer's visit, a first date." -- Kirkus Reviews

I ordered this book after reading Jenny Han's other series To All the Boys I've Loved Before, which I loved. This book is really poor in comparison. The characters are flat and seem very cliche. I didn't feel connected to any of them or really care what happened to them at all. I usually don't mind a slow plot in novels, as long as the characters are well-drawn and engaging. But this book had almost no plot, as well as flat characters, so by the time I got to the end, I didn't care what happened. I had planned to read the whole series, but I'm so glad now I waited to order the other books. I won't be reading more.

This book was a pleasant surprise to me. I was recommended to read this back in college, and I just kept putting it off. I am not sure why, but I did not know what this was truly about and wished I picked it up sooner.I really enjoyed the characters and the plot. I am not a huge fan when stories jump from past to present, but it did not bother me too much in this one. It might have helped that I listened to the audiobook.I figured out the heartbreaking scenes from the beginning, but I still ended up tearing up during the big reveal.Overall, I really enjoyed this and will definitely pick up the next book….especially with that ending.

This book touched my heart . I've read the whole series twelve times already. The pages are filled with passion, sadness, confusion, and loss. The words are written in the perfect way to have your heart pumping and aching for the same kind of love story. You won't find any other book with the same heartwarming kind of writing. This will make your heart melt away making you hold your breath until the and , then leaves you with more emotions. I highly recommend this compassionate book to anyone with a pink heart.I love this book and ill always will.

I read this book after reading Jenny Han's "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" which I adored, but this book really flat in comparison to that one. I found it extremely shallow and to be blunt, a fairly boring story. I still finished it sure, because having read another Han novel I thought maybe there was more to come…not so much.Although it was a short, shallow, simple story it took me a few weeks to get through it just because it was dull. Nostalgia factor, eh… character quality… boring…. overall plot? Already asleep thinking about it. The kindle edition has a preview to the next book in this series, which I didn't realize was series quality, but ok I read it anyway and it was still no better than the original.I would not recommend reading this book, although I finished the book it took me awhile and I was never excited to pick it back up, rather I was excited when it was finally over!

I just want to put a disclaimer on this series to let you know if you are thinking of reading it, it will leave you feeling REALLY dissatisfied in the end. You will read all 3 books waiting for the ending that will never come...or it comes in the form of a few pages pretty much as an epilogue. The story you are waiting for and WANT to read about just happens in summary form. It's really frustrating. So be warned!!The first two books they build up one of the characters, making him seem like this amazing guy, even though you know ultimately she is attracted to the other brother. Then she finally gets with the amazing guy and everything is perfect, only for the author to completely destroy the character that you have grown to love. It REALLY made me mad. Then she pushes you to want Belly (I hate her name btw, I don't care if it's just a nickname) to go with the other guy, who in my opinion, never did anything throughout the series to ever make you want to root for as a love interest. I perhaps could have been persuaded to like said guy if them finally getting together wasn't a summary at the VERY END of the last book. But I did read all 3 books so I guess I liked them enough for that. But if I would have known how they ended, I probably wouldn't have started to read them in the first place. It's not a BAD ending, there just isn't enough of what you have (supposedly) been waiting for for THREE books. I need more than just a summary in a few pages at the end. Disappointing for sure.

I'm sorry to say I did not love this book. I gave it two stars because I did finish reading it. Otherwise I would have given it one star. The main character is so amazingly self absorbed and there is such a lack of communication between everyone. No growth in the characters….. I just kept reading thinking it was going to get better and things were going to be worked out. Or that it was going to get better and it just didn't. I just don't love books that go that route.

I loved the characters in this book and the sweetness that is Belly Fisher. I loved the descriptions of the summer house and the days that never wanted to end. I just wish it wouldn't have ending so abruptly. It's like the editor sliced it in the wrong spot or something and just wants us to read the next books. Well, I would've read them anyway, but I like my endings a little sweeter.

So I thought this was going to be so lighthearted and cutesy and then boom! It gets so real and heartbreaking and yet so beautiful. Jenny Han’s writing is impeccable and the storyline superb. And I have to note, being a Virginia girl, having my favorite rollercoaster mentioned just makes me love this author so much!

Salted Caramel Apple Pie   2 recipes Basic Pie Dough, rolled into 2 rounds 11/2 cups (12 oz/375 g) granulated sugar 1 tablespoon, plus 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice 11/2 cups (375 ml) heavy cream 2 teaspoons sea salt 5 lb (21/2 kg) Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and each apple cut into 8 slices 1/2 cup (31/2 oz/105 g) firmly packed light brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 3 tablespoons cornstarch 1 large egg beaten with1 teaspoon water Turbinado sugar, for sprinkling Flake sea salt, for sprinkling  *Serves 8-10     1. Make the pie dough. Fit 1 dough round into a 9-inch (23-cm) deep-dish pie dish and trim the edges flush with the rim. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.   2. In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine the granulated sugar, 1/4 cup (60 ml) water, and the 1 teaspoon lemon juice. Cook until the mixture bubbles vigorously and turns a golden amber color, about 9 minutes. Remove from the heat and carefully add the cream, stirring until the sauce is blended. Stir in 11/2 teaspoons of the salt and let cool until just warm.   3. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).   4. In a large pot over medium heat, stir together the apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and the 1 tablespoon lemon juice. Cover and cook, stirring occasionally, until the apples are just tender, 10–12 minutes. Uncover and let cool to room temperature. Stir in the cornstarch, the remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 3/4 cup (180 ml) of the sauce to the apple mixture and stir together; reserve the remaining sauce for serving.   5. Pour the filling into the crust. Place the remaining dough round over the filling, trim the edges flush with the rim, and press the top and bottom crusts together. Brush the crust with the egg mixture and sprinkle with turbinado sugar. Place the pie dish on a baking sheet.   6. Bake until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling, about 1 hour, covering the top and edges with aluminum foil if they brown too quickly. Let cool on a wire rack for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, before serving.   7. Reheat the reserved sauce over low heat until just warm. Sprinkle the pie with flake salt, slice, and serve with the sauce.

This book was bought as part of a gift. I looked through it before I sadly gave it away. I would have loved to keep it for myself. The recipes look like they are easy to follow and the pictures are great!

great book

Unique and delicious pie recipes.

None

Love it

This was a gift i am sure the reciepent will love making all the different pies :)

I received this cookbook as a gift and as an experienced baker I was excited to try some new recipes. The book is beautifully written and the photos are likewise, gorgeous, BUT the cookie crust recipes are wrong! Please change your copy if you have one to use half the butter called for. I think it was a “copy and paste” error, but for roughly 8 oz of cookie crumbs, you only need 1/2 stick (or 4 tablespoons) of butter. Their recipes call for 1/2 cup (8 tablespoons) of butter. This will make a gummy, oily crust that will not set up. For this reason I can only give three starts to an otherwise lovely cookbook.

This book was surely written by a beautiful person. At the time of the second Scott expedition to Antarctica, this person was young, loyal, hard working, sensitive to beauty, attentive to the best in every person, courageous, and very near-sighted..The loveliness of this man makes me angry at Scott and his right-hand men (like the scientist Wilson). I can't help but feel that there was something seriously wrong about the Scott expedition. The author at maybse 25 - 27 years accompanied Wilson and Bowers, another right-hand man, on the "worst journey" of the book's title. This was a six week trek over ice in the middle of winter in the total darkness with temperatures that descended to -73 degrees F. in order to --- collect the eggs of Emperor Penguin's. During the journey, the author could not wear his eyeglasses. He starved. With the two others, he had to despair. The nerves of his teeth were killed by the frost. At one point, Wilson told him, "You simply must learn to use an ice ax". Plainly our author may not have been trained or able to see. Yet, throughout the author looks up to Wilson, whereas it seems to me that Wilson was a somewhat crazed and obssessed man without a true regard for his fellows. An expedition that would have sent three men into the unknown in the most frightful season in the most frightful unknown place was stupid and cruel. No concepts of duty or advancement of science can excuse the entire incompetence and carelessness. I suppose the expedition was systematized only by a sense of honor and manliness. There was something wrong about the Scott expedition. From this book, it struck me as old-fashioned or rigid in values, too loose in organization, too diffuse in its goals, too classist. As to the latter two, the author tells us that the expedition was primarily scientific. If so, the journey to the Pole was not necessary as science could have been satisfied by a concentration of resources that the Polar journey diluted. Additionally, the author here would perhaps not have had to take the worst journey and another group of researchers would not have been stranded for a whole winter (!) on their own while Scott went to the Pole. As to may remark about classism, I am struck with the disregard, almost contempt, in which the ordinary seaman Edgar Evans is discussed or ignored, and the honor heaped on Oates of the cavalry or dragoons ---- as if both men as they died had not given their total "vitality", as the author might say, to the Polar journey.I will read more about the author. I understand that a biography of him has recently been published (?). I would like to know what happened to him as I sense that he essentially knew that he was in the hands of the unorganized, to say the least, and the obssessive, to say the most.

Reading this very long, two volume book was an experience unlike any other. I had to read it in somewhat short bursts because the fear of what awful thing could possibly happen next to: the ponies, the dogs and the men, was unbearably painful. This story is told in multiple points of view, all eyewitness, from notes, letters and diaries. Cherry-Garrard did a masterful, empathetic, professional and heartfelt job of compiling and weaving together his experiences with those of his companions. These men were giants of bravery, fortitude, intelligence, comradship, cooperation, planning and the ability to push beyond all physical and emotional boundaries -- in constant darkness, ferocious blizzards, low low temperatures, exhaustion, fear, grief, and more. It is the detailed story of Scott's three year and final unto death journey of scientific discovery and ultimately reaching the south pole (unfortunately, Amundsun got there first). They don't make men like this anymore. It would be worth reading accounts of all the participants, as each had specialties, and unique personal character traits that meshed into a perfect working system that seemed to bring out the best in all. The story of the author's trek to collect penguin embryoes in the worst conditions imaginable can't be bettered and all to have the scientific community in Britain act like the specimens were virtually boring souvenirs. These men almost died many times obtaining the eggs and getting them back to the main hut. Another heart in mouth moment was rescuing the ponies drifting off on an iceflow that had broken away and being circled by hungry killer whales. Sad as I felt for the sufferings of the men, it was even worse reading about the plucky ponies who shouldn't have been in that extreme environment in the first place. Poor things. This book is a must read for anyone interested in knowing about a life(ves) well lived! Also it is a peaen to the beauty of this vast continent. You don't normally think of explorers as poetic souls but often the only book brought along on a sledge haul was one of poetry. Some of the atmospheric effects described with phantom suns and brilliant colors make me want to visit, something I would never have been interested in before. There are also lovely descriptions of seal and penguin personalities and antics. This book puts you through the whole emotional gamut -- better than any novel.

Outstanding! This is so good; I bought the book as well as the kindle version. An intriguing report of exploration. The journey to bring back the Emperor Penguin eggs was extraordinary. I learned a lot and also did some further reading. There is still more to the story that Cherry-Garrard did not include, (i.e., the plan for the British explorers to meet a German explorer at the pole}. Given the time that Cherry wrote the book, just after serving in the War, it is understandable that the German explorer was not mentioned. It is also possible that Cherry was unaware of the coordination intended with the German team since it did not really concern him. Cherry described his role as, "adaptable helper" with little formal responsibility. The incredible effort of the team is especially moving written from this point of view.Cherry-Garrard did the world a great service by writing this book, I think. There is a lot of wisdom in his writing.Garrie

Only read this book after reading an article in Smithsonian Magazine. It struck my curiosity regarding article expeditions. Wow, what man will do for science or fame? But, mostly I was touched by the care and concern each team mate provided each other. Also, as an animal lover I was struck by the care given the ponies, mules and dogs. These men were extraordinary individuals who can be compared to current and past astronauts.
