There is a thread that links the greatest interpreters of legend and mythology of the twentieth and early twenty-first century, running from the genius of Marcel Granet, through the solitary and towering phenomenon of Georges Dumezil, again through the great French school of Hellenic interpretation of Vernant, Detienne, Vidal-Nacquet and Nicole Loraux, and most recently to the American Gregory Nagy circle. Olga Davidson is well rooted in the work of all these giants (except perhaps Granet) and her study of the Persian great epic makes excellent use of all their discoveries, besides showing admirable perceptivity and considerable courage. She boldly rejects a whole tradition of historicizing accounts of Ferdawsi, rightly arguing that the account of how the poet was led to write his great epic was not a piece of history but a legendary view of the Poet as Poet. Her interpretation of other features of this great masterpiece (among which, inevitably, towers the figure of Rustam) is equally perceptive, and nourished everywhere by a fine literary taste and sympathy. It is to be hoped that this book becomes a landmark in its field.

I studied under the author in college in the early 80s. The story of the Persian Book of Kings was so interesting that I saved all the class material and was happy to find the book. I highly recommend it as a must read for anyone interested in this period listerature and in near eastern literature. This story is one of the most memorable I have ever read. The characters live in your mind with a substance unparalled. I even named my dog Rustam after reading this years ago. (if that helps any LOL) Hi and thanks to the author, for sharing her knowledge of this story, and that of the Arabian nights with me :)

I was drawn to this book by my interest in Persian literature and expected to find a serious examination into the Shanama. Having read the book, I find that it is worthy not only for its educational value, but also as captivating pleasure reading. The author does an excellent job keeping the reader interested and involved with the main characters. She fully develops the plot and characters and has a gift for description. This book evinces the author's expertise in the arena of Middle-Eastern literature and is laudable for identifying new mythological aspects of the Shanama. For those interested in Persian poetry, this book is a must-read and perhaps should be required reading for anyone studying Middle-Eastern literature. Aside from its academic value, I found the writing style of the book to be clear, concise, and attention-grabbing. The author has done well examining the Shanama (not the easiest of things) and writing a fascinating book.

I got this as a gift for a very special person who loves the land (North Dakota) as much I as do (Nebraska). We have become accustomed to our own snapshots of favorite places, and even with wonderful digital cameras, we don't get the sweep that matches our emotions as we gaze at the land and sky. Andrew Moore and the pilot who mounted a camera on the wing strut open up the land as it goes toward the horizon--sunshiny and ready to harvest, or bleak, it's bigger than we are. In all these years man has safeguarded it or mistreated it, it still reminds us how dependent we are upon it. Even if we break it, something will be there after we are not.This book reminds me of my love for the land--of my neighbors' love for the plants and crops it produces, the animals that graze upon it--of our longing to be worthy stewards, and to live WITH the natural cycles rather than to manipulate until we betray the land.

Out of this vast Plains country photographer Andrew Moore travelled from the Dakotas down to Texas and took sixty remarkable photos for the book. What makes so many of his images rather special is that they were taken with a camera mounted on the wing of a small plane. This enabled him to cover the vast distances easily and land near visual interesting places for a ground shot. The idea clearly paid off because as well as the aerial shots there are others well away from roads and tracks which a road bound photographer would never find.I thought the aerial photos particularly fascinating because the Cessna Cub allowed Moore to get close enough to buildings (frequently abandoned) and vegetation to reveal the feel of landscape. The first photo in the book stretches over a spread and shows a small schoolhouse, built in 1900, set in the brown countryside with no road, pupils went to school by horseback. Other aerial shots show farms with two or three building and no other structures or trees for miles. This is more than a book of excellent landscape photos, the human side of the Plains is revealed with images of fracking in North Dakota, pipelines, freight trains, pivot irrigation, cattle farming and some portraits of hardy folk who are happy to live in this rather inhospitable country.'Dirt meridian' is a beautifully produced and printed book, the back pages have two essays and thumbnails of all the photos with interesting captions. Like his 2010 photo book of Detroit ruins (also published by Damiani) Andrew Moore has delivered a fine selection of Plains imagery.

What a great book if you care about the 100th meridian - even if you don't, you'll like the images and the text - they're beyond compare

Love, love, love the pictures. Andrew Moore went above and beyond to capture the hidden beauty of the 100th meridian. He really captured the soul of the land.

You had to go to the back of the book to read about each picture in the book......Would have preferred the caption to be with the picture.......a lot of trouble to go to for info on a picture.......

This is a book that we can relate to here in the Sand Hills of Nebraska, in fact, my husband found a picture of a house he had worked on in the late 50's early 60's and we saw several places we recognized. The pictures are excellent.

Linda R. Hirshman is retired from her position as the Allen/Berenson Distinguished Visiting Professor of Philosophy and Women's Studies at Brandeis University, where she taught courses on Western political philosophy and the regulation of sex and violence. I purchased this book before I started law school as a primer to help give me an idea of what to expect. I found the book to be honest and helpful as an incoming student. I think the book would have been more helpful if I hadn't chosen a school already, but the advice in the book is good for any school. I can tell you law school is stressful and time consuming. I found a lot of my female friends shocked by the competitive environment which is something this book can help you prepare for. Overall, it was very helpful and insightful.

I'll be honest, I couldn't bear to do more than skim through much of the book. I found it incredible condescending and coddling in presentation and tone. The hour I spend paging through the book was likely the most wasted hour of my life. You want to prepare for law school, read OneL to get acquainted and save yourself the wasted time reading about how "Fem"-Friendly law school is or isn't. I gave is two stars instead of one because it did discuss a couple VERY basic concepts from torts and touched over citation with a few sentences. Seriously, a complete waste of time and written in such a way that I personally find insulting to women.

This book's value far exceeds its cost. Hirshman leads the reader from the "considering law school" stages, through the application process, up to post-law school interviews meanwhile focusing her advice specifically to the interests of women. Based on her own research, Hirshman gives women their own Law School Rankings that compares the schools in terms of their female-friendly learning environments. While searching for schools to apply to, I never would have considered the % of writers who are women in the school's Law Review as a factor, but Hirschman explains why that factor and several others are so important for a productive and successful learning environment for women in Law Schools. By introducing women to ways in which their learning style typically differs from men, Hirshman's book brings a truly valuable awareness to any woman who intends to pursue the competitive study of law. I think every woman considering law school should read this. It is academic and insightful, not full of common sense as most books of this type tend to be.

I only got through the first few chapters of the book before I was so OFFENDED I had to stop. The author clearly believes she is speaking to an immature and unintelligent audience. This is what cinched it for me:"At lower status law schools, the students of both genders are often the first generation of their families to get a higher education, and even a modest middle-class life seems good to them" (14). Why beat up your readers, Hirshman? I happen to be a first generation law student who is very displeased with the attitude of the book. I do not reccomend this for anyone.

This book explains how to choose a law school if you are a feminist who wants to go where no one will challenge your views. Hirshman seems to believe that feminist principles will crumble if exposed to any criticism, so she encourages people to choose schools that have lots of feminists, do not have any conservatives (and preferably not many men), and that will never question feminist beliefs. The problem is, lots of people say that the purpose of law school is to have your ideas challenged, and to face and overcome those challenges. Will Hirshman's approach train feminsists who like law school, but aren't very good lawyers?

Changing habits has got to be the hardest thing a person can do. Habits are so easy to form, I don't even notice I'm forming them until they're creating a real problem for me.This book helped me see how to form habits that not only aren't holding me back, but are good! That might sound simple, but for me it isn't at all. I'm a grumpy, stubborn person, but I have to admit that once I got into the swing of making better personal choices it kind of started to be a hobby in and of itself.It's funny how I know something to be true, but I don't want to act on it until someone says it to me in the right way, and that's exactly what I got out of this book.

This book isn’t straight to the point, or a simple guide on how to change your mind in 21 days, fix relationship, improve career etc... like it says on the cover. I found myself skipping pages hoping to get to a point where it may say, here what you should be doing or practicing within 21 days to change your mind for good.... It’s basically the authors life story from hitting rock bottom to choosing to better himself by not being alcoholic anymore and changing his habits which naturally made his wife not be so fed up with him. The book speaks more to those who are into computer hacking (or computer nerds/geeks) as it guides them on how to analyze your mind like you would a computer. I get the sense that the author wanted to tell a bunch of stories from his own life, famous inventors, mathematicians, scientist etc... then use their experiences to inspire others to want to change. But it doesn’t really give you a straight up guide like: “here’s what you should do to change your mind”. I personally would not recommend it to a friend unless I know their into computers.

I recently had an aortic heart valve replaced and I feel 20 years younger. Then I read Sir John Hargrave's "Mind Hacking" and now my mind feels 40 years younger! His tome is a masterpiece for DIY. Forget head shrinkers, rehab centers and personal trainers. "Mind Hacking" is worthy of a Pulitzer Prize, something I will shout from a soapbox in Times Square. Don't walk. Run to your computer and order this brilliant, well organized treatise on changing one's mind for good.

At first this appeared to be a potentially useless book as the author doesn't seem to have credentials related to psychology and goes into being a recovering alcoholic (eye roll, sorry), BUT the exercises are helpful and even innovative at times. I like this book--it pretty much brings together all those mind tricks that you've read about in different places into one resource. It also attempts to hold the reader accountable, which is nice.

Seen this at my library first and after about 3 weeks with this book, i was like i have to own this book. I dont normally buy books but this one is so worth I believe. It is so well-put, very straight forward, and really great concepts to change the way we think and act. How to ultimately become the master of your own mind!

This book was great because it speaks to me in a language I prefer (Computers/Programming). But I cannot stand the audio book quality. It sounds like the speaker is constantly vaping during readings which causes the audio to become foggy and then clear. Its more of an annoyance, but it makes it hard for me to listen, because the volume changes are hard on my ears when played in my car or on my phone.Nonetheless it is a good read and caused my own paradigm shift.

It is a great set of tools that are presented in a fun way. While not every tool or idea will work for everyone, the author presents several ideas in a progression to help with concentration and focus as well as more control over your thoughts. A book well worth reading for everyone.

Book is wirebound, which makes it easy to work without removing them. Pages are also perorated, so they can be removed.What I don't like:1. Some of the colors are pre-filled.2. Some of the lines are thick.3. Entire book has a weird smell.I wouldn't buy it again or recommend it to a friend.

This was a great reintroduction into coloring. You don’t need to think about what color to use other than trying to match their color with your crayons. I didn’t always have one even close, even though I have over 100 different ones. But the end result is still beautiful. Great paper quality and great drawings that range from quick ones to more time consuming ones. The binding is great as it’s almost impossible to tear a page out unless you want to. I have only used pencils so I can only attest to the fact that the numbers rarely go away. It didn’t matter to me but if it does to you either try using markers or look for a different book.

For some reason it's hard to find color by number books in stores, they're usually paint by numbers which *IS* different. She's enjoying coloring with these, and I'm enjoying the completed colorings that she's giving me.

The whole point behind Color-by-Number is to indicate the correct color for a person with limited artistic skill.But the pictures in this book are very simple, mostly abstract and use a pallet of only five colors.The old Venus Paradise Color by Number sets for children were more detailed and had a much larger pallet. The result was a picture which actually looked nice. This book creates pictures which would look equally random no matter which color you picked.Take a look at the cover. It is the most complex picture in the book. Notice that each square is actually monochrome.The best use of this book would be as an art challenge. Based on your experience, chose a larger pallet and create greater details. You might just get good enough to not need the numbers any more.

I wanted to get a color by number coloring book because it reminded of being young and doing painting by numbers. I loved this one because there were actually some cute pictures in the inside. Very thick pages too so markers don’t bleed through the pages.

Omgosh 😱 this is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE coloring back. I have different ones from Brain Games. Love that it is spiral. The paper is great quality as well. HIGHLY RECOMMEND

Addictive. Didn't want to stop til the book was done. Would love to have more like these
