This is a small booklet, and a quick, simple read. It is a good introduction to Naval operations and I recommend it for new division officers.

A quick read to reinforce some old axioms and ensure routine things get done routinely, with expertise in 5th Fleet and FDNF. If you already know this stuff, good on ya, read it again 2 months in to your tour. Make sure you put Sunset Cigars into the POD because you are OPS and you are awesome.

Arcadia is a play that takes place at Sidley Park, a stately country home in Derbyshire. The play shifts back and forth between the early 19th century and modern day Sidley Park. The action in both time periods takes place in a bare room with a large table.In the 19th century, Thomasina, the daughter of the house, is working with her tutor, Septimus Hodge; there are books and Hodge’s tortoise. In the modern time, Hannah Jarvis, an author, is working on a book about the history of the gardens – or, more precisely, about the hermit-genius who lived in the 19th century gardens like a “garden ornament” or “pottery gnome”. She is joined by, among others, Valentine, a son of the house, and his tortoise. In each time period, people come and go and dramas unfold. But the room and table remain constant. As the play proceeds, everything from both time periods remains on the table. The table and its contents are period neutral, and, by the end of the play, the table has become quite cluttered with objects.There are striking parallels between the two time periods. Early on, questioning her tutor whether God is a Newtonian, Thomasina asks “[a]m I the first person to have thought of this?” (p. 9). In the modern time, Chloe asks her brother “Valentine, do you think I’m the first person to think of this?” (p. 77). There is humor. Valentine explains to Hannah how her tea is getting cold – by itself. “Your tea will end up at room temperature. What’s happening to your tea is happening to everything everywhere….It’ll take a while but we’re all going to end up at room temperature.” (p. 82). The modern day dramas involve the 19th century dramas – an attempt to sort out the past with meager historical evidence. There is poetry and duels; parks and a hermitage; heat exchange and Lord Byron. And, there is Entropy. As the play progresses, so does the chaos. Toward the end of the play, the distinct time periods begin to bleed into one another. They proceed at the same time and intertwine. Chaos ensues. The result is a fascinating, intellectual drama. Arcadia is a great read, and I hope one day to see it performed.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Tom Stoppard is one of the most innovative and challenging playwrights around and this play, considered by some to be his masterpiece, does not disappoint. After reading it, someday seeing it onstage is now a goal. If you are unaccustomed to reading scripts this may be a challenge but, if you can visualize how it would be produced while reading it, you will be caught up in it.

Another reviewer began the review with this: "Arcadia is one of the most touching and enlightening works of literature I have ever read. The interweaving of ideas from physics, fractals, literature, architecture, history, psychology and many other fields of knowledge hidden in the play is just perfect." I agree with the sentiment. I adored the live play; saw it twice! I also read the play afterwards -- now twice, too. The reviewer I quoted, though, got bogged down later in the review of whether Stoppard is brilliant enough as Einstein or is just showing off. The play is not a Philosophical Inquiry of Great Rigor. The ideas, to me anyway, are like the proverbial unicorn story: see one (wow! is it real?; a couple folks see it: super-wow; but once everyone sees it: "so what? it's a horse with a horn in its head."). The delight for me was not in the "novel" ideas, but in the way in which they are used as another means of entertainment: much as characters in an Eric Rohmer (French) Film might discuss Kant's Synthetic A Priori. The characters are IMMENSELY entertaining and that they discuss philosophy or math just adds to what is entertaining about them -- specifically it adds variety. So you have the usual drama subjects, but more too. The main thing then is this: ALL is WONDERFULLY done and you derive your pleasure from all the very well-done VARIETY of fun and drama and topics ALL NICELY WOVEN TOGETHER, not hodge-podged at all.

Arcadia should have been popular 10 years ago.Today it is more important that it be performed.It may be too late 10 years from now.Tom Stoppard writes like George Bernard Shaw were still alive.That came as a surprise to me.I looked into it: He wrote my favorite movie "Shakespeare in Love".To me Arcadia asks the question: " Can Chaos theory and fractals bring back the days of reason and the greatness of the British Empire?"To which I answer:" No. but that is no reason for us not to believe that we can fight for a future where we control the rabbits and not the rabbits control us."How can we believe in a genius named Thomasina or a fellow who grouses about grouses?Arcadia was written while the history was very much in flux;before Per Bak became the modern Darwin and gave nature a method for a purpose.A monkey biting a man and a girl in ashes...this play should be made into a movie.It's time travel sequences demand more than the stage can give.

The story divides between Thomasina, the owner's young daughter and her tutor Septimus, and the academics Hannah and Bernard, investigating a possible scandal caused by Lord Byron when he stayed there. Being a dog lover and having recently lost my mom, this story really spoke to me although I started crying at about the second paragraph. A dog can truly be man's or woman's best friend and visa versa. I do believe that dogs really understand loss and they also instinctively know when you are trying to help them. This is a story of loss, death, grief but also about recovery, albeit recovery is a series of baby steps which was beautifully told in this story. I gave this story 5 stars even though this hit a bit too close to home as I too have been saved by my dog during this last year of my own struggle with grief.

I love stories about dogs and how they can teach us about unconditional love. I loved the ending most of all. However, a word of caution is necessary. I cried during some of it. It's just amazing how much we can learn about life from dogs if we would just open our hearts and our minds to it.

The love of the mother for her daughter is comforted by showing love to another. There is no more loyal a companion than a dog. The shared sorrow turns into shared comfort.

I am so happy that I found this short story .It is really sad but awesome. It remind us that life goes on when we feel that we lost everything.I had tears in my eyes as I read this well-written story.I couldn't put it down until I had finished it . The only thing I did not like about is that it is too short. One sweet dog and one grieving women have something in common , they both lost loved ones ,so bound together to go on.Very sweet and touching.I really recommend this book especially if you an animal lover.

I figured it was a dog story and that I would like it. I was right. Based on the blurb (and before I saw the length), I thought a romance would develop between Faye and the widower. I was wrong. And I'm so glad I was. A romance in this case would have ruined the story. It's never easy to lose someone or something that is in your heart. We all deal with loss in our own way, and one way is not necessarily better than another. We need a certain amount of time to grieve, and then a certain amount of time to be able to move on.

It is one of the best dog stories I have read. Don't miss reading this story.

Wonderful and very moving. I enjoyed immensely , bringing back memories of my own golden retriever, who, I lost way too early. It speaks of the great bond between pets and their humans.

Great little story about the love bond that exists between us and one of God's greatest creations - the dog. I've had many of these four-legged angels grace my life and understand their great capacity for unconditional love and friendship.I do think the story would be improved by showing the reader what is taking place rather than just telling us. However, it was a sweet read.

I’ve been waiting for this edition of Injection for a while. I looked forward to reading the series as a whole, rather than piecemeal. Ellis rarely disappoints and he doesn’t here. Lots of interesting ideas and a clever story, held together by Shalvey and Bellaire’s fine artwork. Based on just that, I would give this 4 and a half stars. Why only 2? None of the series really neat and evocative covers are present here. Not the main covers and not the variants. This is a fifty dollar book. It’s put together well enough. It’s handsome and very sturdy, but omitting the covers is inexcusable. What comic geek doesn’t care about covers? Especially when they were as good as most of these were. To bad. It was a great read, but I can’t help but feel that something’s missing...

This newly released edition encompasses the first 15 issues of "Injection", previously available in three separate 5 issue volumes. "Injection" is an interesting enough series even if you have just had a chance to read an issue here or there, (piecing it together over the gaps), but when it's read in full and in order, (as here), the effect is stunning and satisfying.The premise is that, (under the auspices of some shadowy, bureaucratic organization), five accomplished people with highly specialized and unique skills, created a "non-biological artificial consciousness emulator", (the "injection"), based on a weird combination of cutting edge tech, folklore, and eldritch "magic". The purpose of the project was to make the future more "interesting". Well, mission accomplished. The AI escaped and took up hiding, although it reemerges from time to time and makes its presence known by creating reality-bending events connected to folktale, horror, and mythic themes and tropes. When the AI manifests, the group of five is reconstituted to contain the outbreak. There are complex love/hate relationships among and between the five, which can be a mix of humor, pathos, loathing, affection, or some shifting combination of all four. The characters are a bit random, but are better than the usual cliches, and grow on you as the series proceeds. So far each five issue arc has featured one or two of the five.You see where this is headed? It's all Outer Limits, Torchwood, X-Files, Dr. Who, but with a well constructed frame, shoutouts and sly references to various other authors and genres, and five deeply eccentric characters who take turns, through flashbacks and the like, in leading the action.The writing is crisp. Banter is clever, and even the occasional monologuing is engaging. There are even a few laugh out loud lines. Set out in one volume as this is, I didn't have any trouble following the story. Spread out over 15 different issues, and taking into account the random flashbacks, I could see this being a bit of a memory chore. It's true that some bits are confusing and there are occasional lines that seem to go nowhere, but that's also true of my cable bill and I still pay that every month.The drawing is serviceable and always suits the plot and action. It's realistic when needed, but can also be horrific, psychedelic, gruesome, or awesome, as the story requires. The splash pages and big backgrounds are usually more convincing and interesting than the small panels and talky transition settings, but that didn't strike me as unusual.Bottom line? This isn't a new artform or the dawn of a new literature or anything like that, and it wasn't promised or promoted to be that. It can sometimes feel like a low key myth-tech update of "The Golden Bough" or "The White Goddess". But it is also entertaining and smart in an engaging fashion. And it has that nice Celtic seasoning that always improves the flavor of myths and folklore.
