Walls-Travels Along the Barricades is beautifully written and eye opening. Marcello Di Cintio takes his reader on a journey to walls across the globe. He delves into suffering and courage alike through personal stories of individuals he encounters along the way. The details in the chapters are historically very informative as well as captivating. I was assigned this reading for a college level English class. I must admit I was a little nervous that this was the book our professor chose. Admittedly, politics and history are not exactly in my wheelhouse. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I took away from Walls. Not only was it interesting, I feel like I am more informed and aware for having read it. Di Cintios' writing is full of artistic grace and conveys a powerful message.

A compelling, personal, historical-journalistic tale that ushers you alongside the author to meet, speak with and experience the lives of those living in the shadow of some of the worlds most notorious divides. It's a very appropriate book to be reading in our modern political age. With touches of humor, poetic insights and grace, Di Cintio wants you to feel what it's like to meet walls that are meant to keep people apart - through the voices and stories of some who live beside them. What do they share in common? What are their differences? And why do we keep building walls, at all? This book fascinated, inspired, and humbled me. I am better for reading it, and suggest you do too.

Another look at walls, but not just the usual suspects. There is some fantastic storytelling in these accounts, whether they be the dramas of wall-climbers or the testimonies of people whose lives are divided by political barriers.

This book made me aware of wallsI did not know about and made me feel in part, as a human being, responsible to let them stay.Let us bring them down!

Walls: Travels Along The Barricades follows Marcello Di Cintio in his travels to different walls around the world. This is a commentative piece of non-fiction written to share the author’s view on how walls and borders effect people’s lives and psychology. Each chapter features a different wall and is centered around the people who live there and the author’s experiences in visiting. While the book’s focus is on these people, often times the interviews are short and paraphrased. In contrast there is a lot of time put into how the people at these different walls live, their mannerisms, culture, and interactions with the author.Walls is a reasonably well written book. It has some powerful lines and passages, but tends to rely on metaphors and irony to the point where it can become tiresome. Some parts that are intended to hit you like a punch fall flat because it’s the third or fourth time that chapter has swung at you. The book is more intriguing when it isn’t trying to hit your emotions; the travel writing aspect where the author interacts with the people is often fun to read, full of details about other cultures. The writing itself is legible, but is a bit inconsistent when bouncing between simple, literal lines and longer, implicative ones. This book is not neutral; the author has strong opinions about the wrong and right of each wall, and from the beginning sets out to reaffirm his points. If you are interested in accounts from people living near contentious borders, or if you enjoy reading travel writing of interesting locations and conflicts, you would probably enjoy this book. However, if you are looking for a documentary on a certain conflict, in depth interviews, or well-referenced evidence I think you should take this book with a notable dash of salt.

With my first take of the book I was not interested with it at all. Although when I began to read deeper into it I began to feel very interested and driven to learn more about all the wall around the world. With every new encounter in the book I felt it was truly remarkable the way he went from wall to wall encountering with all these different people that many would never get a concept of how they live and think. No matter how dangerous the city, Di Cintio felt the need to talk to as many people as he could to gain a better understanding of these walls. It was an eye opening book that showed the reader how people segregate themselves from each other or create barricades as easy ways of not facing the real issues. I feel that Di Cintio does a stellar job at painting a picture for the reader of how each barricade is presented, built, and the culture around it. It is a must read and so very important to all to be educated in the ways of why governments and people do what they do whether it be purposeful or not. Highly educational and riveting!

The book “Walls: Travels Along the Barricades” is a journalistic story that shows Di Cintio’s travels throughout the world and borders that he visits. This book is amazing because it’s extremely informative on places that I personally hadn’t even heard of. This book makes you feel like you’re actually travelling with Marcello as he is very descriptive throughout the chapters and makes you get a sense of what it’s like for the people who live near these borders. He helps you understand the history behind each wall and the effects it’s had on the people/communities it separates. Personally, I really enjoyed this book because it taught me that there’s more to the walls that just surround us. There are walls all over the world affecting everyone in some way, shape, or form. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about the walls and lives of others around the world. 10/10

Her Highlander’s Heart by Fiona FarisThe story begins with the battle at Dunkeld where Gavin, Lucas, Magnus MacGille and their clansman Thomas Graham fought alongside their friend the Laird of Clan MacKenzie. Gavin and Thomas witnessed Elias MacKenzie, the Laird’s nephew, kill him. Elias saw Gavin and Thomas and ordered them seized. Gavin was held in prison. Thomas was brought to the dungeon at Mackenzie castle. With Gavin missing after the battle, most believed he was dead, but his twin sister, Milly still felt their connection. Milly and her friend and maid Violet travel to MacKenzie castle to speak with the Laird of Clan Mackenzie about releasing Thomas from the dungeon.Nathan MacKenzie returns home from Bounty hunting to find castle MacKenzie’s guard towers unlit, and the keep quiet. Nathan’s Uncle and Elias’ father, William MacKenzie informs Nathan of his father’s death and his cousin Elias’ intention to claim to be the clan’s Laird. William MacKenzie knows his son will destroy the clan and encourages Nathan to find a bride and claim his Lairdship of Clan MacKenzie. When Milly arrives at MacKenzie castle she finds Nathan and learns of his father’s death. When they were younger Milly asked Nathan to marry her, but Nathan rejected her seeking adventure instead, leaving Milly heartbroken. When Milly asks Nathan to release Thomas from the dungeon, he asks for a favor in return - to wed him. Cousin Elias is even crueler when he tells Milly her brother Gavin is still alive and in an English prison. He offers to help free him in return for her hand in marriage. The leaves her with a threat if she does not agree.Milly decides that though she hates Gavin for the past, she asks Gavin to agree to help her free her brother, and she will agree to marry him. The adventure begins. Traveling to Perth, staying in the city, devising a plan. Elias is not going to sit back and let it all enfold providing intrigue and danger around every corner. My favorite character in this book was Milly because she is headstrong, brave, beautiful and loves her family. I liked this book because there was evil, danger, excitement and love. The descriptions bring an understanding of how life and relationships were in 1690 Scotland. You should read this book if you like adventure and handsome highland lads who will do what it takes to aid the lady in distress. Fiona Faris does not disappoint – she brings it all.

Love for her brother, and love for his clan is whatbrings them together to defend against a common enemy…Milly would do anything to save her brother, even get married to the man who had rejected her.Two Highlanders need a wife. One is a man she once wanted to marry the other is his despicable cousin who she would never want to have anything to do with. Without a wife, Nathan runs the risk of being cast out and the lairdship to fall into the hands of his greedy cousin Elias MacKenzie. With her twin brother missing Milly would do almost anything to bring him back home safely but she does have her limits. One of those is to become Elias MacKenzie's bride. This book has so many twists and turns it sometimes becomes overwhelming. That is my main reason for giving it 4.25 of 5.0 stars rather than a higher rating. It is a good book but is maybe a bit too long.

Another great story from Fiona! Milly and Nathan had grown up together but had a falling out when after a kiss she asked him to marry her. He turned her down and left to find adventure. He broke her heart and she hates him. Years later she sees him again while in a mission to help her maid and close friend get her fiance our of the Mckenize dungeon. Nathan is back home because his father was killed in battle now he needed to become laird before houseful cousin tries to steal it from him and ruin the clan. They both ask for Millys hand in marriage. She turns them both down until she learns from Elias her brother is alive and in prison. He says he'll use his influence to get him out but only if she agrees to marry him. So she comes up with a plan of her own because she knows she can't trust Elias and he is evil. She asks Nathan to help her rescue her brother and in return she will marry him so he can become laird. This is where their adventure and love story begins. This book has adventure, suspense, action and romance! Can't wait for the next one! I received a free copy of this book in return for an honest review.

I finished Her Highlanders Heart today. Fiona is an amazing author who's story telling ability continues to evolve. I found out today I missed Her Highland Secret the first book in this series. I will be down loading it soon. The title I finished today was a fast paced tale that kept me turning the pages. Her main characters Nathan MacKenzie and his childhood former friend Milly MacGille must put aside their differences and join forces in a common quest. Clan MacGille are resigned to the fact Millys twin brother was killed in the last battle against the English. Milly holds out hope that he is alive somewhere. After receiving information he is alive she forms a plan to rescue her brother and enlists the help of her former friend Nathan MacKenzie bounty hunter. In exchange she agrees to marry him thus securing him the title of Laird MacKenzie. As the story develops so do their feelings for one another and Nathan's cousins hate for themboth ! This story would have gotten 5 stars but their were some editing issues but it was still a very good book. Ireceived this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
