This books is fantastic for someone with minimal coding skill. My level of skill was just being able to modify Excel macros I'd copy from the web, but I found this text did an excellent job of walking me through the process of creating a Rails app. One of the strengths of the book is repetition. You iterate through building the same app three times. The first is just a sketch of an idea. The second adds a little more complexity. The third iteration walks you through building a full application.It's not only that, but there's repetition of best practice. I've read other books that show you the best practice once and never show it again. Hartl, I think, assumes many of the tutorial's readers have little coding experience, so reinforces the best practice by repeating the instructions of a good practice, rather than just referencing the good practice as a beginner I probably don't remember. Some of these instructions are now drilled in my mind that I can't forget them.The approach of learning the app building process as the priority over learning the syntax of Rails clicks with me (to be clear, the book does discuss the code quite a bit, but teaching syntax is not the main strategy of the tutorial). While this approach left me a little hazy on the actual language of the Rails framework, it's given me the experience of knowing what I need to look for and learn for myself and make some sense of Rails resources online. It's given me a blueprint of what I should be figuring out when I make my own Rails app.

This is a great book, and while it's excellently written and designed (so I can fully understand why the average rating is so high), I just can't bring myself to give it five stars.The main problem I am encountering is that enormous boatloads of information are introduced without explaining the motivation for the tools or meanings of terms. Frequently, key terms are either not explained or explained using other jargon, or the explanation is saved for later. Maybe it's because I'm a beginner, but I have learned Perl, Ruby, some JavaScript, and besides, I know a lot of the unexplained jargon I'm talking about is unique either to Rails or to modern web programming, and so should be explained in a book like this. The explanation usually does come, albeit later than I wanted it.Let me give you an example, chosen practically at random. We learn that there is something called the asset pipeline. That's the problem in a nutshell, come to think of it: over and over again, we learn that there's something called x, then we learn the code or procedure for it, and by learning that (not knowing what the hell we're doing or why), we arrive finally at knowing what the thing is and why we're doing. So anyway, on p. 200 of the book, we're told that the asset pipeline "significantly improves the production and management of static assets such as CSS, JavaScript, and images." Fine, so the asset pipeline, whatever it is, improves all that, but...what the hell is it? Now, it might seem unfair to insist on this question being answered up front, considering that Hartl immediately proceeds to answer it. But he answers it by diving into the weeds. But it doesn't really come clear until the end of the section (p. 203), where he zooms out for the forest-level view and explains that programmers like to separate their code CSS and JS and ERb into multiple files and use lots of white space, and while this is nice for them, it's awful for site speed. So what the asset pipeline does is provide a (rather convoluted) method for combining all the JS, CSS, etc., files into one file, without any needless (to the JS engine) white space, and ditto the other files. Well, that's just peachy. I understand that, more or less. But why couldn't he have just said that up front? Then it would have been a lot easier to understand and contextualize the previous three pages.Many other, similar examples could be given.Now what I really loved about the book is that it is extremely thorough. Eventually, I do feel like I understand the stuff. The instructions are extremely explicit and, as far as I can tell so far, absolutely correct. The structure of the book seems very good; as a walk-through, so far, I'm not sure how it could be improved on.My advice to other users of this book (who should be using the 4th edition...I bought my copy just before it was published) is to read it very carefully and trust that the author will clarify most of the important stuff eventually. And when he does, it will be great.

There is a reason that this book is rated 5 stars by myself and so many others. Put simply, it's hands down one of the absolute BEST introductions to Ruby on Rails programming out there. What Hartl is able to cover in over 600 pages (teaching you to build a Twitter clone), is a truly comprehensive introduction to Rails and Test Driven Development (TDD using MiniTest). If you're a beginner I'd certainly recommend going through the codeacademy Ruby & Ruby on Rails tutorials before diving in. Doing so will give you a background upon which to better understand some more complex information in the later chapters. If you're an experienced programmer you may find more value reading the online edition. However, if you find yourself mentoring another developer or teaching a class I'd certainly recommend the book so as to reference page numbers and take notes for your students sake. My only critique: there were two spots where the code in the book either contained a typo or didn't work properly as given; however, a quick check against the online version and Hartl's Github repo for the sample_app fixed that issue without too much time lost. Bottom line, if you're serious about learning Rails development and enjoy working through a book over watching videos/reading blogs get the Rails Tutorial now.

This book is a lot of fun and relaxing. It's very good for me since this the first time I have tried this. I have o e that is more detailed, but this is more relaxing for me.It also has a site to download more images!! Doing that after I submit this review!

This has been one of my favorite coloring books by far I love the designs. Each page is complex but easy enough to complete in one sitting. I have nearly completed the book and will buy some of the other books in this series. One thing about this book is the paper is really nice with a smooth texture that takes ink really smoothly with full coverage without requiring going over multiple times. The pages are perforated so they can be removed and used as journal pages or framed. I use markers and unfortunately they bleed through the page so the reverse of the page is dotted up with bleed-through but there isn't much help for that. Also, the designs are all different but have similar design elements from page to page so the lack of variety in the details might not appeal to some, Otherwise I love the book myself and highly recommend it. I used a wide variety of pens - sharpies, color pencils and gel pens.

This book is for everyone, young or old, professional artist or curious novice! There is a picture on one side only, which I like because then the colors don't look like there is a different picture in the background. The paper he a nice texture, not too smooth for those o u who like layers of colors and shading. Page three has several places to look fr tips and he a bonus! The pages are square (8.5"x8.5") with the pictures printed on the left hand side with the right side being blank. It he always been more comfortable to color on the left side than the right for me. Use any coloring method -pencils, markers, crayon, watercolor, gel pens - let your imagination help you relax. A really nice book for those just beginning to color as an adult.

I purchased the Kindle book and used the link to download the drawings. I very much connect to butterflies and this coloring book gives a wide variety of drawings. Some butterflies take up most of the page, others are small. These are not realistic butterflies, rather line drawings to help me relax, meditate or simply have fun coloring. I like the fact that they aren't realistic because then I do not feel bound to color them in such a way as to make them look real. The butterflies in this book can be colored to be butterflies in my imagination.I'm very pleased with the book. Like all downloadable coloring pages, I very much like that I can print off a page as often or as little as I want. It means a favorite design isn't used up after coloring it one time.If you like butterflies and coloring, this is a good choice.

Unless I missed it, I didn't see this was a left-handed book. Being a rightie, this is a first for me. I have an adjustable lap tray I bought from AMAZON just for coloring. It supports right handed book. It will be awkward for me to color. Kudos for left-handed people.There are plenty of butterflies to keep busy for quite a while. I would recommend small tipped pens or sharpened pencils for this book. I am really looking forward to coloring this last of the Broderick S Johnson collection I seem to be seeing on my shelf.

This is a beautiful selection of butterfly coloring pages. they are unique and intricate, so you will not be bored and they are perfect for relaxation! You also get a link to download a PDF version of this coloring book, so you can print and color any pages as many times as you want to. That makes this one of my favorite coloring books yet! I have always loved to color, and I've always had coloring books around. Now that adult coloring has taken off there are so many beautiful and more intricate coloring books out there, and I love that coloring is now a main stream activity! And artists like this one who offer such beautiful work for a great price, and include the PDF version are just wonderful! Can’t wait to get back to London to do a few more of these walks

Our first trip to London, I checked this out of the library and took it with us. Now, I have my very own to make notes on! This book gives very accurate directions for truly interesting and memorable walks. Looking forward to taking this copy across the pond!

We tried two of the walks in this books. It contained multiple errors and needs to be updated. The directions are confusing. Things that are "on the left" were on the right. Historical houses were listed in the incorrect order and "take a break" stops and shops no longer existed.

This is a beautiful story about a woman who is left at the alter on her wedding day, and chooses to take charge of her life, so that she will never again fall prey to going along with another persons expectations of her. Three years later she is still shaken, not because she missed her fiancé, but because the event left her doubting her own ability to make competent life decisions. I so identified with the way a little encouragement at her workplace catapulted her to reveal the inspired and creative talent that she had always surpressed. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this story.....Lily’s character was vulnerable and had me cheering for a happy conclusion. Beautiful story, well written and memorable.

The reviews of this book set me up for antipating a good read on a cold winter day. I snuggled In my favorite chair with my blanket and had a hot cup of cider at my side Unfortunately, I never found the humor. No laughs from me. It was okay but I would not necessarily recommend it to someone. I could empathize with Lily’s situation and was hoping for. . . Oh, I don’t know. Something to see humor in? But the storyline was predictable and I foretold the ending.Does anyone read the book before it is classified under romance and humor? Maybe the reviews for this book got attached to the wrong book

I'm about half way into this book and have noticed that the author seems to be copying lines from the movie "Morning Glory". The part with Lily on her 2nd day as the editor-in-chief at the newspaper is almost an exact copy of a scene from that movie, especially the lines about toxins and rejuvenasation. Once I saw this. I was disappointed. I also agree with another reviewer that Lily's whoa is me whining and pining over the wedding that didn't happen gets old.

I love this book because Lily went through so many times that she picked herself up and persevered through all sorts of situations. Her bucket list adventures were real but extremely funny. She deserved the happiness she finally found. A sequel would be great...hint, hint!!!

I rarely leave reviews; however, this book has earned enough of my irritation to write a few lines. The story is cute and I would like it significantly more if I had never seen the movie Morning Glory. Several conversations/ scenes in this book (published in 2018) are blatantly plagiarized from the movie (released in 2010). The author did not even try to reword or paraphrase, and it cannot be mistaken for "inspiration." The conversations are verbatim from the movie, including the fictional word "rejuvinisation". Extremely disappointing.

Enjoyed it. It's my second Colleen Coleman book and I like her style. I did however think some of the characters needed a little more depth. But overall a nice read!
