About the Author
LAUREL THATCHER ULRICH was born in Sugar City, Idaho. She holds degrees from the University of New Hampshire, University of Utah, and Simmons College. She is 300th Anniversary University Professor at Harvard University and past president of the American Historical Association. As a MacArthur Fellow, Ulrich worked on the PBS documentary based on her Pulitzer Prize-winning book A Midwife's Tale. Her work is also featured on an award-winning website called dohistory.org. She is immediate past president of the Mormon History Association. She lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

This is a very in depth, fully researched book the title of which might seem a bit misleading.Why?Because the author coined a phrase in the 1970s that since has been seen (often with "rarely" in place of "seldom") on T-shirts and bumper sticker and slogans just about everywhere.The author addresses this in great detail in a very long preface which, in an of itself, could be the basis for a college course.The book examines the lives of three very distinct women from three very distinct centuries and eras, yet discovers commonalities amongst the three and explores them.This is not a easy sit down and read book, yet the material flows smoothly. She can be a bit long-winded at times, yet her insight can takes away one's breath.This is an excellent resource for all people wanting to explore humanity, as well as a specific side of our species :-)
I am thoroughly enjoying reading this interesting book, especially all the various ways in which this motto can be interpreted...Best of all is achieving our goals, and daring to try, even in often uncharted waters!
Laurel Ulrich tells tells the story of how her quote,"Well behaved women Seldom Make History"struck a chord for so many women. Asa a historian she has many ideas to explore and I find this to be a fascinating book.
Great read. It reinforced my belief in women AND history. I am a midwife, dedicated to women and their transitions in life , such as motherhood, grandmother hood, and the journey from maiden to mother to matriarch to crone. I learned much. And it reinforced my beliefs and knowledge.
Laurel Thatcher Ulrich writes wonderful women's history books. Have learned a lot from her.
This is a great book! I really like this author and her perspective. I gave this book to a high school senior going through some difficult personal situations in her life. She enjoyed the stories about the challenges these women faced and what they did to address the issues. She felt inspired. I would recommend this to everyone.
This never felt like a high school history book but I think it SHOULD be one! I loved it and have recommended it to many women. It jumps across time, across cultures and across disciplines but isn't choppy. It steadily frames just how amazing the history of womenkind is.
The best feature of this book is the wide range of relatively unknown women whose stories are told. The book is very well researched, with vivid storytelling. A must read -- even a textbook -- as an introduction to women's studies at the college level.
