This was a text book needed for my Special Education Law for the Class course. The scenarios were great examples and really pushed your understanding of the law and how it is applied.

I bought this for my class, and to be honest I have wondered while reading it, how true these stories are. Good examples I suppose in order to prepare me for being a special ed teacher, just seems a little watered down at times, or clearly biased in some way.

I have recently received this book and can truly say it is an awesome purchase. I have been passionate about Turkish food ever since I lived in Istanbul and have taught myself a whole range of dishes. I have an entire shelf full of Turkish cookery books and it's really difficult now to find recipes which I don't yet have and which are practical. This checks those boxes. The photography is awesome and the recipes are delicious. There are a lot of practical, delicious recipes here which are not found in other Turkish cookery books. One little niggle is that sometimes the featured dish is shown in conjunction either with another dish, which is not identified, or there are some beautifully-photographed 2-page photos but the dish featured in those doesn't seem to be identified either, but all in all I would say this is an excellent purchase for those who either know a little about Turkish food and are looking for a beautiful book which serves a very practical purpose or the complete beginner who is interested to find out. The photography is really beautiful and definitely serves the purpose of making the food come right off the plate and making you think you just have to make this dish because you want it to turn out exactly as pictured and eat it. Which I suppose is the very purpose of food photography. This book would be a good purchase along with another excellent new title, 'Jerusalem' by Ottolenghi, or the small but incredibly practical 'Turkish Cooking' by Oliphant, which has been in constant use in my kitchen since it's purchase in Istanbul. I thoroughly recommend this book.

This gorgeous ode to Istanbul’s timeless cuisine recalls Rebecca Seal’s “Istanbul” in its photo-heavy layout and simple, straightforward mezze that can be assembled at a moment’s notice. From the embossed cover to the vibrant street scenes and mouthwatering food, this is a visual delight. Predictably, mezze star prominently, particularly yogurt-based dips and salads, pide, sigara boregi, along with some stellar stuffed vegetables, kebabs, lamb and seafood. Sweets include apricots with clotted cream and walnuts, a pistachio baklava, orange and filo cake, and a Turkish bread and apple pudding. A gorgeous illustrated glossary rounds out the book. The next best thing to a plane ticket to Turkey, the city is as much a star as the food. I loved that every photo and restaurant mentioned also has a address listed, so you could theoretically use this as a guidebook on your next trip to Istanbul!

This book is a wonderful compilation of foods you actually find in Istanbul, one of the best international cities anyone can visit for Middle Eastern and Mediterranean foods. The recipes are easy to follow and totally authentic. I have visited Istanbul many times, and just reading this book made my mouth water. Kudos to the author.

Had only tried a few Turkish recipes before I got this book, and was really crossing my fingers that some of the classics I had eaten in restaurants (such as borek and gozleme) were in here.Luckily they were, accompanied by many other delicious looking things that I can't wait to try out.One thing I love is that there's a lot of information about the ingredients, culture, etc. of Turkish cooking, and it's really helpful for someone who's not super familiar with this cuisine. Following the recommendations in the book, I was able to go out to an international food store and find the things I needed for these recipes really quickly, rather than aimlessly wandering the isles like I usually do.

I don't believe these recipes were tested. At all. If you know how to cook, you can probably adjust them so that they work. Great idea, poor follow through..

After visiting Istanbul, this book is such a joy. The recipes and images are equally delicious! Worth every penny!

Although this is a well-written book it is Very Wordy. She drags us through history with Hanging Gardens of Babylon, and much more. Also, the tone comes across as very elite and expensive, as she and her husband plant hundreds of trees and talk of their acreage. So, nice, but a little pretentious, as us commoners worry about budgets and space in our little plots.

This account of one couple's experience in creating their garden in the English countryside is entertaining and afforded me many opportunities to think, " Isn't that just the way it is!" But imagining all the physical work they supposedly did on their own really exhausted me. I do really appreciate their approval of letting plants be "natural" to their surroundings and like its justification of the lovely mess I keep.

Mirabel has given me the mental freedom to allow my garden to "drift" and not be so perfect....WOW!

This delightful book has been my favourite garden book for many years. I made the mistake of loaning my original copy and never got it back. It's been out of print so I was thrilled to find it online. Beautiful photos of a lush British garden.

Chaos in the garden? That's something I can relate to, so this title grabbed my attention. The photo of the author on the back cover depicts a middle-aged woman, barefooted and wearing a straw hat and a frumpy outfit backed by ferns. What the photo could not convey was that what the author might lack in fashion sense, she more than made up for in literary style. As a garden writer, I've quoted frequently from these eloquent pages.

Ms. Osler wrote this book after her best seller 'A Breath From Elsewhere' so maybe my disappointment is owing to reading number two. I honestly can't see why everyone is so excited about this author. It's a nice book and pleasant to read before you go to sleep, but not particularly insightful (Jim Nollman, Allen Lacey), funny (Henry Mitchell), filled with useful information (Miss Elizabeth Lawrence) or historical tidbits (Anna Pavord). It's a good read, but doesn't deserve 5 stars.

On the enchantment of gardening, Mirabel Osler writes, "Somewhere, invisibly and very powerfully, I am being got at by something very pushy...I know that when I walk into my garden and start working, I am drawn across an invisible threshold I never knew existed until I began to grovel." Warm and insightful, this book belongs with the classics of garden literature.

The home she lived in was not awarded to her for winning a court case. It belonged to who grandmother who was a free slave and she purchased the land and built the home and outbuildings with the money she earned as a merchant. For a fascinating and factual account of her life based on much research check out Carolyn Morrow Long's book. The address listed as the haunted location in "The Octoroon Mistress" does not match that of the Bottom of the Cup Tea Room. Both locations are on 2 separate streets! The information provided about Charles and Laura Larendon in "The Devil Came to New Orleans" is not factual. With all of these flaws it is hard to trust the credibility of any of the information provided.

I bought this book directly from a shop in the French Quarter. I purchased it some time ago for my Kindle but the device was irrevocably damaged during a flood. That aside, I found this book an interesting mix of history and macabre. For anyone who has an interest in New Orleans dark side, this tome is a must read. The introduction (something I rarely read) provides a brief step into the history of the city. Afterwards, the author takes the reader on a journey through the haunting history the beginnings of the city to almost present day.Some of my favorite parts are:~ The LaLaurie Mansion: a supposed dinner party turns into a blazing scandal that revealed the dark truth about a notorious socialite.~ Marie Laveau: Celebrated Voodoo queen and keeper of secrets.~ The Sultan's Palace: a mysterious Royal and his entourage meet an equal strange end.~ Haunted Hotels and restaurants: one could be sharing desert with a long ago waiter or entertainersThis book is spine tingling and hard to put down. I often re-read parts to relive to fascination all over again. I Believe the author did fine jobs and I highly recommend this book before a trip to The Big Easy.

No real detail. Very little background or detail on the sites or history to backup any of the view undervalued stories. Very disappointing

Troy Taylor is always an interesting writer. He does a lot of research on his subject of area, and all the books I've read from him make history fascinating. I really enjoy all of his books, very informative.

Perfect if you're going for a visit. This book gets you ready.

Taylor is a master. I am an historian and feel that I know the history of New Orleans fairly well. Still,Taylor's history is fantastic. He weaves the "dark" history of the City into the ghostly and hemakes you never want to put the book down! It is strange that I thought I knew something about theCity, but Taylor opened new doors for me all along the way. And, after all was said and done I cameaway from the book with a hopeful, upbeat feeling about the City and her future!

Excellent read on some of the different homes in new orleans. While visiting the town I reference the book while walking around.

I have visited New Orleans several times and knowing some of the history, this makes me want to go back and understand it all better!
