Like the previous reviewer, I also have some questions/concerns about Higham's accuracy. I've read at least 5 other books about Thalberg, Shearer & MGM, & several things here are new to me including allegations that the Thalberg Shearer marriage was shaky (I've always read the exact opposite previously), & that Thalberg had a tendency to scream at people when he was angry (I've previously read that his persona tended to be quite mild mannered). I'd be very interested to hear other Mayer/Thalberg/Shearer biographer's opinion of this book's accuracy. I also question the allegations that Walt Disney was a Nazi sympathizer amongst others. My 2 star rating is with the assumption that the book is factually inaccurate.To me it pretty much reads as one scandal after another..... there may be SOME truth in that!

I very much enjoyed this biography of L.B. Mayer and his dream factory, so much so that I read it twice. It containes a lot of rich historical information. I love history and I love the movies. This book was right up my alley. (Pardon the cliche.)A must read for people who love stories about famous men and how they made their fortune.

Being a huge fan of classic Hollywood, I snapped this book up and devoured it quickly, thoroughly enjoying all the juicy bits and behind the scene information. Once I got over the initial excitement of so much gossip all at once, I took a closer look, and found that in many, many instances, Higham gets the most basic information completely wrong. Information that is laughably easy to verify. For example:1. Norma Shearer and Irving Thalberg's daughter is named Katherine, not Barbara. She was born in 1935, not 1936.2. Ted Healy died from injuries suffered in a bar brawl, kidney failure, and alcoholism, not from a heart attack brought on by Mayer. He was 41, not 45, when he died.3. Jean Harlow never had an affair with her stepfather, Marino Bello; in fact, she hated him. And she didn't encourage her friends and colleagues to invest in his "gold mines," either.4. John Gilbert didn't die of a heart attack. He was given a sedative by his nurse, had an adverse reaction, and choked to death while unattended.And so on...In addition, Higham is very partial to some stars and absolutely hates others; these attitudes come across in Mayer's biography so strongly that they are often distracting from the story itself. Garbo is a monster of selfishness. Crawford is a bed-hopping tramp. Shearer is a terrible snob. Some of which may be true, but I'm sure these people had their good sides, too, but you won't find such balance here.At first glance, there is quite a bit of fascinating, never-before-known "information" in this book. After realizing how little the author checks his facts, though, I have to wonder if any of these incredible tales are true, or even close to true.

In his prologue, Higham tells us that much of the information he discloses has been drawn from hitherto sealed government files. Its more believable that he had long conversations with Howard Strickling, since Strickling was head of MGM's publicity department during the reign of Louis B Mayer, and the one responsible for the covering up of the secret lives of the stars. I guess the fun about gossip is in the discovery of the sordid details. Perhaps it's then only fair that I drop some of the names mentioned and let you discover the particulars. There's actually not a lot that was previously unknown to me. There's the death of Jean Harlow's husband Paul Bern, and then later the death of Harlow herself. The day of the lamentable shortage of knockworst in the commissary when no jockstraps could be worn under tights. The not too surprising inclination of Garbo's mentor Mauritz Stiller. Garbo's repeated no-shows for marriage to John Gilbert, and Mayer's dislike of Gilbert stemming from behaviour long before Garbo came into the scene. Why Garbo never bore a child. The fate of the footage of extras being drowned in Ben-Hur. The men killed by both Clark Gable and John Huston. Lee Tracy's forced retirement. How George Cukor nearly lost the job of directing Camille, as well. The supplier of drugs to Judy Garland. And Leni Riefenstahl's attempts to join MGM. The scandals seem to dissipate once we hit World War 2, or is that Higham's focus is more on Mayer's infidelities, and eventually his clashes with Nicholas Schenck and Dore Schary? Higham also presents a filmic history of the studio and it's output. I wish he'd only given us more dirt, because I get the impression that these scandals are just the tip of the iceberg.

What a great addition to a great series! William's experience shows an entirely different side of Litmus and society. It's a great, exciting, novel. I've really enjoyed the Institute books as well as the Litmus spin-offs. Would recommend them to anyone!

Well I didn't think I could love these characters as much as I loved kaylas`s characters from the Institute but I love them just as much if not more. Nuka, William, sasha, Brett are all awesome and I can't wait to read about Illy. I love this whole world and cant wait to read book 3.

Wow! What a great sequel to Nuka! I need more already, and I just finished! Kayla Howarth really made Will' s story really brings together all of the Litmus stories and Institute Series.

This book is wonderfully written, with a great plot and cast of characters. Ms. Howarth has done it again with Protecting William. I'm eagerly awaiting the 3rd book. What happened to Illiyana?

Loved this book and the whole series of books - Institute and Litmus. Its nice to read a series and find each book as enjoyable as the previous ones. The characters are exceptional, as they are supposed to be, but they’re also likeable and relatable. The writing pulls you in and makes you invested in their fate, and William’s story is no exception. Great author and worth reading the whole series.

I'm a huge fan of Kayla Howarth's Institute Series, so when I found out she was switching gears slightly yet staying in the same universe for the Litmus Series, I was stoked. Despite having a plethora of familiar characters, Losing Nuka was a completely different kind of story, yet it still retained Ms. Howarth's unique brand of crisp writing, unique plot-lines and snarky (oh, SO snarky) humor.Several years after his big sister Nuka left home to become the equivalent of a super-powered MMA fighter in an underground (read: illegal) fighting league known as Litmus, William it taken aback when he runs into her quite by accident. This encounter triggers his own super-power, and soon he is swept up into the same dangerous world that Nuka is unable to escape. She is not happy, and him Mum, Allira, is even less enthused.What he doesn't count on is falling ass-over-teakettle-in-love with Sasha, Nuka's (biological) sister. What could possibly go wrong? (Answer: A LOT.)I won't spoil anything, save to say that I got what I've come to expect from Ms. Howarth - a fun, easy-to-read, rollicking story with great characters, action, romance and plenty of twists. I am a fan for life. Saving Illyana, the sure to be gripping conclusion, can't come fast enough for me.

Of all the illegal fight joints, William had to walk into Litmus. It’s not how either Nuka or William had hoped to see each other again after four years. What started out as a sneaky lad’s night out has consequences no one could have foreseen. So starts the next instalment in the exciting Litmus series. I was hooked from the first page and grew to like the main character, William, Nuka’s younger brother, very much. He is one of these good guys, but without being smug or annoying by being a holier than thou saint. If you’ve not read the institute series I would recommend you do, as the same characters feature in the Litmus series and it is nice to see them have grown up in the books. The book is narrated in the first person so we see the world through William’s eyes. It’s always a hoot to be part of somebodies thoughts and insecurities, especially if they are the opposite of the actions he takes. Great work again Kayla, I loved protecting William. (And I’m glad you went easier on him than Nuka, I guess you have a soft spot for him too.) Look forwards to reading saving Illyana which came out a few months ago.

Molly Yeh is a baker, blogger, writer, and farmer living in East Grand Forks, North Dakota. She is the voice behind the wildly popular blog, My Name is Yeh, which has been the recipient of multiple awards, including two Saveur 2015 blog awards: Editor's Choice and Blog of the Year. Molly is also the star of Girl Meets Farm on Food Network, where she cooks recipes inspired by her Jewish and Chinese heritage and her life on a Midwestern sugar beet farm. This is absolutely my favorite cookbook I have ever purchased or seen, I've bought copies for all my friends. I've also made almost everything inside it, some multiple times, and people always ask for the recipes. Her writing style is wonderful and I love reading about her life, I'm so sad I couldn't go to her book signing.Some of my favorite recipes inside include- Pistachio Loaf (I adore pistachios and pistachio butter, this was a dream come true).- Dark Chocolate Marzipan Scone Loaf (One of the reasons I bought the book, everyone wanted more, scones rae the best)- Challah Waffles (I made them in the heart shaped waffle maker I have and they were beautiful)- Brussel Sprout Rosti (the first Latkes I made for Channukah last year)- The Token Green Salad (This is dependable for weeknight dinners as something everyone will like)- Za'atar Monkey Bread (My friends were entranced)- Sufganiyot (I used the dough to make donuts for my birthday and Channukah)- Chicken Potstickers (One of my mother's favorite comfort foods, it passed her test)Though honestly, everything inside is fantastic and it's really the best ever! I also adore her blog and searched for all of her recipes online and in the Forward.

I am an unrestrained consumer of cookbooks. I like ones with great pictures (food porn!!! Yay!!!!) and it's even better when there are stories about the author's life and why they live where they do and cook the way they do. Molly Yeh's Molly on the Range does all that and more. Her photos are seductive, her recipes are not too easy and not too hard. Many of them are just right, and I look forward to working my way through the cookbook, without gaining 25 pounds, preferably.I stumbled onto her blog last year and while many of the email blogs I subscribe to get deleted without reading (sorry, my bad!) I read and look at the pictures multiple times. I often save the recipes. But really, I prefer actual cookbooks, so I was thrilled when she announced this book was soon to be released.Molly's stories and the names she gives some of her recipes make me want to be Molly's new best friend, but not in, you know, a creepy stalker kind of way. Thanks Molly, for opening a door onto your life and sharing your stories and recipes with the rest of us.Not to mention, cake.

Over the years, I've stopped buying cookbooks because I've never really found one aside from my Moosewood cookbooks that seem to have a recipe on almost every page that I want to make. However, once I found Molly's blog I found myself making recipes from it two or three times a week. I finally bought the cookbook and everything about it is perfect. I want to make every single thing inside it and the joyful and fun personality of Molly is on every page. I was delighted to see how thick it was (it's almost 300 pages long) and how much of her writing appears. The book itself is very high quality and the pages are not the BPA-filled glossy ones--they're top notch matte paper that still are able to feel silky smooth and have high quality images. Some matte pages lose the luster of the photos printed on them, but her paper choice for this book was perfect. (Please forgive the adulation over paper--I'm a photographer and paper quality is something about which I feel very strongly). This book is aces across the board.

As a long-time follower of "My name is yeh!", this book does not disappoint! Beautiful photos, delicious recipes (and so many! I was delighted to see how jam-packed this book is!), and charming anecdotes. I have a feeling this will quickly make its way into my cookbook repertoire.

I am a cookbook collector and love to find great new cookbooks with a good solid mix of recipes. This book has quickly become one of my favorites! Molly does a great job of putting small twists on great recipes to make them that much more interesting and delicious. Also, she goes from homemade favorites to exotic sounding recipes in the flip of a page and I love having that variety in one cookbook.Highly recommend for all cooks, all levels! Great book!

I received this book today, not one bit of me was planning to “dive into” a cookbook when I just worked a 12 hour hospital shift. However, I ordered this after watching 1 episode of Molly’s show on Food Network because it was that good and so I figured I might as well peek through some of her recipes. Being a Minnesota native now residing in central Wisconsin, I can seriously relate to the midwestern ways of life and Molly has perfectly blended those traditional, antient recipes along with a stylish flare from the city and its PURE GOLD. I’ve never been so excited to use a cookbook before (I do collect them). So if you are looking for not only some new recipes to try, but a fabulous read, this is it.

I really liked Molly's TV show, so ordered her cookbook. I made her recipe for hummis and loved it. As someone who also once lived in MN and grew up with various "hotdishes," I really appreciate her reworking of them without the cream of mushroom soup. There is a wide range of recipes, from Asian and Jewish food to reworking of upper Midwestern favorites. There are recipes for bread, desserts, and vegan dishes as well. The recipes are accompanied by personal stories of her life. I recommend this cookbook.

A gorgeous book filled with beautiful recipes, hilarious and moving stories, and stunning photography. Not only does it contain excellent recipes for many special occasions, it also holds the keys to the kingdom of perfect challah: Molly's challah dough is bar none.

YUM! My husband and I made the Spinach & Mushroom Enchiladas Verdes from this cookbook tonight, and they were amazing! Freshly-fried tortillas stuffed with cumin-spiced mushrooms, onions, and spinach, topped with cashew crema, salsa verde, and pickled red onions. I was trying to mark the pages of the recipes I want to try, and I've almost marked them all! I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves Mexican food. I think I'll make the nachos next!

Easy to follow recipes by authentic Hispanic who is apt communicator. Authors style is positive professional, and welcoming, without the usual vegan activism pushing at you while cooking. I've tried multiple recipes out of this book and though they haven't been off the chart mind blowing in flavor they score because 1) mexican classics often filled with lard or meat and this book is all vegan but celebrates vegetables vs just remaking dishes by replacing protein 2) author makes Mexican food approachable by using ingredients found in my local grocery 3) gives me recipes that I can actually get on the table within an hour.

no pictures of recipes, for a visual learner this is a bummer, I like to browse and choose based on how I respond to a picture

So far I have made the conchas, and tofu huevos and chorizo breakfast tacos. Both were easy to make and delicious. I can't wait to make more recipes!

So many great ideas, easy to follow. Authentic Mexican flavor. I learned to make corn tortillas that taste so good I rarely ever buy store-bought any more.

We have already begun using this fine Mexican cookbook. I tried my hand at making Seitan, meat substitute, and it was a success! The authors detail is on point and easy to follow for the most part. Next, I'm trying the "chorizo", can't wait!

What a wonderful cookbook! I've tried several recipes and they are all delicious and easy to follow. Even my meat-eating friends and family love every dish from this book. It's become my favorite cookbook!
