After reading a prior book by Henri Nouwen titled A meditation on Dying and Caring Well.This is really bad and I don't see Henri Nouwen's footprint/handprint in this book. Way too many illustrationswhich just distract the reader from the already minimal dialogue. The only reason I bought this was becauseof Henri Nouwen's name as author. Sorry but Mr Gaffney seems to be trying to fill us with statistics of seniors'needs in society and very little help with aging and ready to meet our Maker. I'm 83 yrs.
Be very certain you are willing to "let go" of your positionalties, programming, conditioning, beliefs, values...all of your old ideas on aging. These essays of insight are spiritual gifts given to those chosen to be enlightened and Fr Henri the instrument. The truth for me was painful but...it set me free for the path before me and old age is now precious.....my God saved the best for my 78th year. Kent P. Larsen

I liked how this book used stories, pictures and facts to support the concept of aging. I especially like the spiritual inclusiveness because many books speak only about physical and mental ideas in the aging process. Several of us use this book as a back drop to our discussion of our personal experiences of aging.
Henri Nouwen does it again with thoughtful reflections on the inevitable aspects of aging, the meaning of life and how to value ourselves and others in a world where youth is overemphasized.

This book set me free from a fear I wasn't even conscious of--the fear of aging. I recommend it to anyone at any age. Henri Nouwen's wisdom and anecdotes make it a delightful read.
