A factual and very factual statement of how a small group of chosen men wiped out Al Capone and cleaned up one of the darkest of Chicago's historical chapters. It's tragic that Elliot Ness wasn't more venerated in his own time and I doubt there are many around today who could accomplish what he did with such a few men by his side. This is worth reading just to try to get your head around the fear and horror of Capone's thugs. Men of such character as Ness and his team are rare in any situation; then or now. I would recommend this book to young people because it will give them a good look at what it's like to have your priorities straight, respect authority, and use your imagination to find solutions to impossible problems.
Fans of Brian De Palma's film version of THE UNTOUCHABLES may be surprised at how fictional his adaptation is, that is, if the original book co-written by Eliot Ness is at all accurate.Eliot wasn't a new arrival from D.C. and wasn't married; he was born in Chicago and lived there with his parents. He had no mentor/best friend who was a former cop. The Untouchables were a group of twelve chosen men, not two plus an assigned accountant. A round table meeting where Al Capone crushed a guy's head with a baseball bat never happened. Ness and Capone never traded angry words. There was no horseback raid at the Canadian border. Frank Nitti was a mob boss with underlings. He didn't participate in hits and the film's train station, courtroom and rooftop sequences were pure fiction. Nitti wasn't thrown off a building by Ness; he died a decade later after shooting himself twice in the head with a .32.Much of the fast-paced book by Ness and Oscar Fraley concerns wiretaps, mutual spying, the locating and destruction of illegal stills and Eliot's real concern that once Capone returned from a year of incarceration in Pennsylvania, the Untouchables would be caught up in a war in which they were outnumbered three or four to one, a potential battle that would pit their shotguns and revolvers against car bombs, hand grenades, hired assassins and Tommy guns.Although it never came to a pitched showdown, Ness did have some close scrapes. Only sheer luck and Eliot's heightened sense of danger saved him. His closest ally was a casualty, however.Of all the situations presented here, one would've really added to De Palma's movie, a slow parade past Capone's hotel headquarters of 45 of his vehicles that the stillbusters seized on raids, from small trucks to big rigs, flatbeds and tankers. Finding such a number of old vehicles would surely be a near-impossible task, but it would've made one helluva sight! The narrative loses momentum only during the last few chapters, and Capone's ultimate conviction on tax evasion charges is almost anti-climactic. Even so, THE UNTOUCHABLES was a compelling read and is highly recommended!
