Potterfan and Proud Gryffindor/Thunderbird here so I had to add this book to my library. Do you have to too? Will you be missing out on crucial information if you're a first time reader of Harry Potter (Welcome!)? No; you get a vivid enough picture of the game in the books to make it through just fine. It's just fun extra content to enhance the experience. My tip would be check it out at the library and you'll get a feel if you're the type of person who buys the book or pulls a Ron Weasley and spends that money on dungbombs instead.Content: I like the history of the game; the reactionary newspaper articles that come every time there is a major change in the rules always include a little funny line about someone crying that the game isn't going to be the same again. You get the rules of the game, descriptions of the brooms and other equipment, different plays, one paragraph descriptions of the various teams and leagues. I always like a bit of backstory into the Wizarding World, but the book is short enough not to be tedious. I'm sure that people who LARP Quidditch will wear their texts out because you really do get solid Wiki description of how to play the game.Edition: I got the 2001 edition pictured here. The 2001 Comic Relief editions of the Hogwarts Library books have proved to be my favorite (along with Tales of Beedle and especially with Fantastic Beasts because the commentary goes missing in the 2012 box set). I know there is a 2012 edition of this book that is in the Hogwarts Library box set, but I've heard (have not witnessed) that the content is relatively the same. I think the deal with the hardcover 2012 edition is the cover looks different, more like a textbook and uniform with the other books, but I like my 2001 mismatched editions just fine.Happy Reading!

The book is very nice, I read the first few pages and was hooked. The illustrations are also very eyes-catching, found myself giggling while reading it too. Would recommend for any wizards and witches that are freshly new to Quidditch.

I was a little worried, because in theory it is like a fictional encyclopedia. I thought it might be weird to try to "learn" history, of a history that never existed and might feel like a pointless lecture where I learn unnecessary "facts". But luckily, I was pleasantly surprised that this book was as magical, fun, and just as unexpected as the rest of J.K. Rowling's books. There is a foreword "by" Albus Dumbledore and it is charming and fun. Reading this short book over about an hour and a half left a smile on my face. It actually made me appreciate the quidditch scenes more from the movies and understand the game better. It made me want to watch the movies all over again. If you want a light read, maybe for the bus/train or to read before you go to bed to put you in a good mood, this is the book for you. May I also say, the proceeds of this book go to charity, and a wonderful one, which is a reason itself to buy this book

One of the most in-depth fictional history books I've ever read. Absolutely loved it. Covers everything from how and where quidditch started, the broom games that contributed to the creation of quidditch, the history of all the balls, positions, prominent world teams, and why quidditch isn't as popular in the states similarly to soccer. Wonderful read. Highly recommend if you're a Harry Potter fan. Total nerdgasm.

I wanted Fantastic Beasts, but it's out of print until they release a new version in March. Ordered this and my super Harry Potter fan daughter was visibly unhappy when she opened it. However, on reading it the next day, she was super pleased and said it was much more interesting than she'd expected.

Perfect for Harry Potter fans who like reading backstories and plots. This is a lovely extension to the Wizarding World we know. My favorite chapter is on the different broom companies. It really explains some of the references made by characters in the book. Best of all, buying this will help orphans across the world. Even if you don't like this book after buying it, you will have helped a needy kid.

Was a pretty comical book that followed along with the things said about quidditch in the Harry Potter series

Is it great literature? No. Is it a fun read for Harry Potter fans? Yes. I would recommend it for a quick read.

#494,588 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

About 75% of the way through and have found many "essays" (chapters) provide background I use in everyday action as a zoo docent... and some of it even informs my conversations with other gym rats. Of course, the straight biology-genetics can be a bit dated, but the essence holds up amazingly well. Bonus: Gould is a delight to read and he pulls material not only from biology but also from geology (and theology, and philosophy, and more). He's definitely got a 'point of view' but he also finds it possible to praise those he disagrees with. Just last night I read the chapter on the why-all of size and structure, and Gould not only discussed things like bone cross-sections, but also explained tape-worms, brainpower limits, and the construction of cathedrals. A delight on every page!

In January, I reviewed, the Sixth Extinction (by the journalist, Elizabeth Kolbert) and, like others, found it wanting. I thought it better to read books by scientists with good editors. So I tried to find such a book structured as Kolbert's, i.e. short treatments of disparate matters touching upon evolution and extinction. This 1977 collection of essays fit the bill. Even now, Gould's work stands up and provides the depth lacking in Kolbert's. If this format appeals to you, I recommend this book.

It’s always a pleasure to read Stephen Jay Gould, although I don’t always agree with him.I’ll start my critique with the spelling/typographical errors in the book, then go to the substance issues:1) On page 84, “evolution proceeded in straght lines” should obviously be, “evolution proceeded in straight lines.”2) On page 86, he writes, “My sample included seventy-nine skulls and antlers . . . “, but on page 87, the caption to the graph says, “the actual data include 81 individuals.” Which is it, 79 or 81?3) On page 209, twice “the idea [or dogma] of cerebral primary” was mentioned. Obviously, this should instead be, “cerebral primacy” (it was spelled correctly twice later, on page 211 & 212).4) On page 237, “could offer no explanation other then” should instead be, “could offer no explanation other than.”5) On page 262, he writes, “the situation becomes much more complex with twelfth cousins, four times removed.” Twelfth should instead be twelve in this sentence (12 x 1/8 = 1.5).6) On page 265, the question, “How can it help us understand the contradictory amalgam of impulses toward selfishness and altruism that form our own personalities” should end with a question mark, not a period.7) I’m not persuaded by his arguments in essay 17 (The Reverend Thomas’ Dirty Little Planet):a) On page 141, he writes, “Often, religion has actively encouraged science. If there is any consistent enemy of science, it is not religion, but irrationalism.” Well, religion itself is anti-scientific . . . it is itself irrationalism personified. Did Gould forget the Inquisition?!b) Again on page 141, he writes, “Burnet began his inquiry to determine where the waters of Noah’s flood came from.” There’s no such thing as Noah’s flood; it’s a fiction.c) On page 143, he writes, “Utterly fantastic? (referring to Burnet’s account of earth history) Sure, for 1975; but not for 1681.” Well, if it’s fantastic for 1975, then it’s fantastic. Period.d) Again on page 143, he writes, “Reason and revelation are two infallible guides to truth.” What nonsense. There’s no such thing as revelation.e) On page 143/144, he writes, “Burnet’s God is not the continuous and miraculous actor of a prescientific age, but Newton’s imperial clock-winder who, having created matter and ordained its laws, let nature run its own course.” Nature can run its own course; no God is needed!!!f) On page 144, he writes, “I do not, of course, argue that Burnet was a scientist in any modern sense of the term.” The problem is not that he wasn’t a scientist, but that he didn’t think scientifically. Some modern scientists are religious. So, they are scientists in their work, but they don’t “think scientifically” in their private life.g) Again on page 144, he writes, “Burnet assumed the truth of scripture and fashioned a physical mechanism to make it happen . . .” Yes, that’s the problem.h) On page 145, he writes, “John Keill, an Oxford mathematician, argued that Burnet’s natural explanations were dangerous because they encouraged a belief that God is superfluous.” Well, that’s exactly what “God” is. So, you can’t have it both ways and believe in God and then believe he’s unnecessary.i) Again on page 145, he writes, “It was the dogmatists and anti-rationalists who got Burnet in the end, not the theists.” In my opinion, theists are by definition dogmatists and antirationalists. They are all one and the same.j) On page 145, he writes, “Scientists have persecuted dissenters, resorted to catechism, and tried to extend [their] authority to a moral sphere where it has no force. Yet without a commitment to science and rationality in its proper domain, there can be no solution to the problems that engulf us.” I don’t believe that science “has no force” in the moral sphere, and I don’t believe in Gould’s concept of “non-overlapping magisteria” which is what’s implied in his use of the phrase, “ in its proper domain.”8) On page 152, he writes, “A dynamic constancy may seem fundamentally at odds with clearly directional aspects of the history of life and the earth. But medieval Christianity could encompass both views in its concept of history.” Who cares what medieval Christianity (or any other religion for that matter) could do?!!9) Again on page 152, he writes, “The New Testament is a replay of the Old. Mary is like the burning bush because both held within themselves the fire of God, yet were not consumed. Christ is like Jonah because both arose again after three days in extremis.” What?!!!! I couldn’t believe a respected scientist would utter such nonsense. At least Richard Dawkins has the courage of his convictions and disavow any sort of religion.10) On page 237, he writes, “With Konrad Lorenz as godfather, Robert Ardrey as dramatist, and Desmond Morris as raconteur, we are presented with man, “the naked ape,” descended from an African carnivore, innately aggressive and inherently territorial.” I read and liked very much Desmond Morris’s The Naked Ape and agree completely with its assessments. It didn’t strike me at all as “pop ethology” or “outright racism.” Morris was talking about humans in general, not about blacks.11) On page 238, he writes, “If we are programmed to be what we are, then these traits are ineluctable. We may, at best, channel them, but we cannot change them, either by will, education, or culture.” I don’t agree that this is necessarily the conclusion of the claims he’s talking about.12) On page 240, he writes, “when Lorenz compares us with geese and fish, we stray even further into pure conjecture; baboons, at least, are second cousins.” Here he defeats his own previous argument.13) On page 251, he writes, “the statement that humans are animals does not imply that our specific patterns of behavior and social arrangements are in any way directly determined by our genes.” I disagree.14) I don't agree with him at all in his criticism of Chapter 27 of E.O. Wilson’s book, Sociobiology:a) On page 253, he writes, “[This chapter] abounds with statements about supposed human universals. For example, “Human beings are absurdly easy to indoctrinate—they seek it.” Or, “Men would rather believe than know.” I can only say that my own experience does not correspond with Wilson’s.” I disagree; my experience does.b) On page 254, he writes, “Since Wilson believes that repeated, often genocidal warfare has shaped our genetic destiny, the existence of nonaggressive peoples is embarrassing.” How did he know that? Did Wilson himself tell him it was embarrassing, or is this just a conjecture?!!15) On page 269, he writes, “I am disturbed by the erroneous idea that genes are discrete and divisible particles, using the traits that they build in organisms as weapons for their personal propagation. . . . they do not directly code for any bounded piece of morphology or any specific behavior. Morphology and behavior are not rigidly built by battling genes; they need not be adaptive in all cases.”First of all, I don’t agree that this is an erroneous idea. Second, I do believe that genes code for specific morphology and behavior, even if these are not adaptive in all cases. They are simply adaptive to the genes.

When it comes to popular writings on Evolution, the two names I most often hear are Dawkins and Gould. While I've read several books from Dawkins, this is my first one from Gould. This one is in the essay format which it seems is the norm for Gould's books. Overall the essays vary in quality but for the most part they're good, although some are a little dated (which happens with any science books published 35-40 years ago). My favorite ones were the first section over Darwin and a section which looks at odd organisms. In this later section, you get some interesting essays such as one over the Irish Elk and my favorite essay about the lampsilis mussel, which makes itself look like a swimming fish in order to get attacked by larger fish, then it shoots spores into the larger fish. This book makes me want to read more of his works.

This was a wonderful reading experience. Dr. Gould is a truely gifted writer with a wonderful wit and colorful style. He has a broad range of interests and knowledge and an interesting circle of friends and collegues upon whose wisdom he also draws (Astronomer Sagan, Geologists Press and Siever, were among those with whose work I was familiar). He also manages to approach "accepted" theories from unusual directions, sometimes with novel and provokative results! The collection of essays includes an interesting work on the effects of the personality of the Captain of the Beagle on the formulation of Darwin's theories; a subject that had certainly never occurred to me. There is also an interesting discussion of the human baby as an unfinished embryo, with interesting implications for the upper limit on brain size and for human evolution as a whole. The effect of size on intellectual potential of the brains of different species, for instance ants vs humans, is the topic under discussion in the Sizing up of Human Intelligence. The interaction of planetary size and surface area and the concommitant implications for development of life is the subject of another article. The effect of social millieu on the development and acceptance of scientific theories is also discussed as is the hindsight criticism of "wrong" theories and their proponents. Probably most interesting, and certainly most urgently in need of repetition even now, is the tendency to use scientific "fact" or verbal slight of hand to support social status quo or even abuse by those with a political agenda. Many of the essays could be well used in high school classes to teach and encourage critical thinking and novel approaches to what is commonly held as "fact." I would not just recommend the book to you, I would encourage you to read it cover to cover!

A factual and very factual statement of how a small group of chosen men wiped out Al Capone and cleaned up one of the darkest of Chicago's historical chapters. It's tragic that Elliot Ness wasn't more venerated in his own time and I doubt there are many around today who could accomplish what he did with such a few men by his side. This is worth reading just to try to get your head around the fear and horror of Capone's thugs. Men of such character as Ness and his team are rare in any situation; then or now. I would recommend this book to young people because it will give them a good look at what it's like to have your priorities straight, respect authority, and use your imagination to find solutions to impossible problems.

Fans of Brian De Palma's film version of THE UNTOUCHABLES may be surprised at how fictional his adaptation is, that is, if the original book co-written by Eliot Ness is at all accurate.Eliot wasn't a new arrival from D.C. and wasn't married; he was born in Chicago and lived there with his parents. He had no mentor/best friend who was a former cop. The Untouchables were a group of twelve chosen men, not two plus an assigned accountant. A round table meeting where Al Capone crushed a guy's head with a baseball bat never happened. Ness and Capone never traded angry words. There was no horseback raid at the Canadian border. Frank Nitti was a mob boss with underlings. He didn't participate in hits and the film's train station, courtroom and rooftop sequences were pure fiction. Nitti wasn't thrown off a building by Ness; he died a decade later after shooting himself twice in the head with a .32.Much of the fast-paced book by Ness and Oscar Fraley concerns wiretaps, mutual spying, the locating and destruction of illegal stills and Eliot's real concern that once Capone returned from a year of incarceration in Pennsylvania, the Untouchables would be caught up in a war in which they were outnumbered three or four to one, a potential battle that would pit their shotguns and revolvers against car bombs, hand grenades, hired assassins and Tommy guns.Although it never came to a pitched showdown, Ness did have some close scrapes. Only sheer luck and Eliot's heightened sense of danger saved him. His closest ally was a casualty, however.Of all the situations presented here, one would've really added to De Palma's movie, a slow parade past Capone's hotel headquarters of 45 of his vehicles that the stillbusters seized on raids, from small trucks to big rigs, flatbeds and tankers. Finding such a number of old vehicles would surely be a near-impossible task, but it would've made one helluva sight! The narrative loses momentum only during the last few chapters, and Capone's ultimate conviction on tax evasion charges is almost anti-climactic. Even so, THE UNTOUCHABLES was a compelling read and is highly recommended!

#638,793 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Excellent book so far. I have a working single node installation now. I am reviewing the book at this point based primarily on that, as that is what I wanted first and foremost. There are many ways that are supposed to be easy paths to getting a working installation, and this book will point you toward some of those as well as walking you through simply installing it directly, which is what I ultimately did, after trying a couple of other options and finding them unsatisfactory. I currently have it running on a linux live USB (with persistence) for learning purposes. For those developers who, like myself, have never had to do development in a linux environement, the only single interruption in the hand-holding approach this gave was that I couldn't runsu - hdfsuntil I gave the hdfs account a password. Which require that I runsudo passwd hdfsand choose a password. Similarly for the yarn account you create. Anyone who knows anything about linux would already have known that. But some of us have simply never ended up doing software or data science in an environment that wasn't a microsoft windows world. On page 115 there is a missing . at the end of the linejar -cvf wordcount.jar -C wordcount_classes/which should readjar -cvf wordcount.jar -C wordcount_classes/ .I had installed oracle java insead of then the one the book used (openjdk), and consequently to get that example to compile (still on page 115) I had to usejavac -cp $(hadoop classpath) -d wordcount_classes WordCount.javainstead of the books recommendedjavac -cp 'hadoop classpath' -d wordcount_classes WordCount.java

The book is a very good introduction into the subject for a technical person. It is well-structured, clear, consistent, thorough and logical. Everything is explained with necessary depth answering nearly all questions you are likely to have while reading. Hadoop is not complex by the way - at least when learning by this guide.

This is a Practical guide along with the online companion. Lot of new informations and basics. This is the one of the best book for people who wants to learn the brand new technology (Hadoop) and its latest version. If you really want to accomplish anything by reading then buy the hard copy of the books. No Matter what book you buy. Soft copies just don't work. Believe me.

Having never installed or played around with a Hadoop environment myself, I was on the look out for an intro style book that would give me the basics and enough info to start me off. When browsing this one caught my eye as I didn’t even realise there was a Hadoop 2 and the title was pretty much spot on for what I was looking for so decided to give it a shot.Overall, I enjoyed the book and it was spot on for what I was looking for. It’s a traditional tutorial/walk through type of book on how to get a Hadoop cluster up and running and how to admin/interact with it, but it also covers enough theory that you don’t need to have any prior experience with Hadoop to follow along. However, I would say that I think it’s overpriced in the paper edition and retail price ebook so if you’re interested in this book, try and read it on Safari or get a Kindle edition to make it affordable. Other than that definitely recommended. The book starts off with a really good overview of what Hadoop is, the MapReduce pattern and the changes in Hadoop 2. Good intro material. The next chapter is a more traditional walk through on how to install Hadoop uses both the Hortonworks distribution and the Apache sources. It also covers use of Ambari for a simple web based admin console for your cluster. Nothing too detailed is explained here as it’s covered off later, but it’s a straight forward walk through so is spot on for that. The third chapter gives a really good intro to how HDFS works, covering the nodes involved, their roles and the approach taken to replication and then some basic file system commands. I particularly enjoyed this chapter as I hadn’t used HDFS before and so some of the concepts around the different nodes, compute following data, append only files and block sizes were spot on for what I needed to understand. The forth chapter covers running jobs and monitoring them in the web gui, along with some examples for base lining the performance of the cluster. The fifth and sixth chapters walks through the MapReduce approach to data analysis, using word counting in text files as the main example and then moves on to the basics of writing code to create MapReduce jobs, covering the basics in Java and Python. Simple and straightforward, but again spot on in term of depth. The seventh chapter runs through some of the other Apache tools within the Hadoop ecosystem, covering Pig, Hive, Sqoop, Flume, Oozie and HBase. These are just quick overviews but interesting as I wasn’t aware of some of these. The eight chapter is really nice in that it focuses exclusively on YARN (Yet Another Resource Negotiator), which is new to Hadoop 2 and is one of the big differences in the new version. It walks through how to use YARN for things other than the traditional MapReduce pattern, using the YARN distributed shell as an example, before touching briefly on how some of the other Apache tools can be used with YARN.The last two chapters focus on admining Hadoop through the commands required and the Ambari interface. I skimmed these as I’m only doing a very basic setup to get my head around Hadoop but would look back to these as needed. In summary, the author notes initially that this book is written to a "hello world" level in terms of depth and that’s spot on across the book. It gives you enough info to get you to a working example, and then it’s up to you. I really liked this analogy and it’s exactly the level I was looking for. I also liked the author’s style of writing so will also be going looking for more of his book to find some more advanced material on Hadoop. If you looking for an intro to Hadoop that’s a nice combination of both theory and high level tech implementation, then this is definitely worth a read. One thing I would say is that I got through the book very quickly (3 hours roughly), and was surprised to see when I checked Amazon that the paper version is just over 300 pages as it really didn’t feel like that. It reads more like a book of around 150 pages, which in my head makes sense for quick start book. Why I highlight this is that while I really enjoyed the book, as I mention earlier, I don’t think it’s worth the price of $27 that the paper version is currently retailing for. For me it’s more in the $15 - $18 bracket and so if you’re going to read this then definitely try and go for the Kindle edition which is worth it at $17.

Roald Dahl still delights after all these years. First my daughter devoured everything he wrote and mourned his passing when she was just 11, but now a new generation is enchanted by his timeless magic. Great gifts for young readers, even pre-readers. Dahl never talks down to kids and invites them into an unspoken conspiracy with adventure after adventure.

Arrived in excellent condition, brand new! Make sure you read the measurements! It was much larger than I thought it would be, more like a little children's book. My fault, of course, just make sure you know the size is what you are wanting.

I teach elementary school. Have read this story to close to 200 kids. They're enthralled.

I bought all the children's books as gifts for Christmas for my grandchildren. Hoping to get them to put their phones down. They have not received them yet and I will probably never know if they like them.

Great book. I am a teacher and saw it at the library. Bought it because it is a great read-aloud book for Read Across America day. Very satisfied.

This book is superb! It has shocking but benign language which children really enjoy. The outcome is great in that the villian gets his due in a fun and frivilous manner which is also shocking! The pen strokes of a true literary genius are evident and very enjoyable!

Our 3 year old loves this book!

When I was a kid, I had this book, and could think of nothing better than reading it with my own child. Roald Dahl, most famous for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, wrote loads of books, and some of them were not 100s of pages long. The Enormous Crocodile is a great story that follows in the tradition of Rudyard Kipling. Although a classic, it truly is timeless. I can't wait to read this with my kid!

This is a very well researched and beautifully executed book. It spans decades of surfing, surfers and surfboards. The photos are a rich album of images from the glory days to v bottoms to short boards. There's great writing and great images in concise chapters that take the reader time travelling around florida to meet the best surfers and the best of florida waves.
